Beat me to it. L and arrows aren't even used in 99% of the N64 catalog because of this.
There's a reason why the Dual-Shock became the predominant design basis for controllers going forward. This and the Saturn remote are hyper experimental designs optimized for only a single release (Mario 64 and maybe Oot for the N64, and NiGhts for the Saturn) that they just dropped as the default controller for the system. As much as it sucks not to get them out of the box, I'm glad we started getting "Pro" controllers released to mitigate these kinds of arthouse controllers.

Speaking of the Dual Shock, however....

Might as well throw the other two nintendon't pieces of crap out there. While you're not busy torturing your thumb on the "C-Stick" you can break your TV as you fling the Wii-Mote into a electrical glass housing and burn said home down in the process.

Not to defend the CDI (since this was a controller that came with it at some point) but the much lambasted "Spoon" remote is something that only came bundled with the model 500 series. The consumer models of the 200 and 400 series came with multiple peripherals, including a more standard 'Genesis' looking controller and a TV remote to operate it's video functions.

This one didn't come with the system, being sort of the "Pro" controller for the CDi. I find it interesting since the D-Pad has a removable Joystick to flatten it out. It says on the box that it's made for 200 series systems, but I couldn't vouch for the compatibility with later models.

My bet is that the nasty ass Spoon controller was created as deranged experiment to synthesize the earlier, separate game and tv remotes into one device.

This one is up there for sure

But the only controller I look at and go, "man, that looks really great" is the second version of the Saturn controller. Smaller size than the original, isn't as bulky as the 3D pad they put out with NiGHTS, and just looks cool.

Well, that was the DualDigital, later replaced with the DualAnalog and later DualShock. For that controller is why some early 3D PS1 games are hard to play though

OK, that looks not very bad, though the SNES-like controller looks a bit awkward to play with that joystick

Op can correct me, but I thought we we're talking about this from purely an aesthetic standpoint? The Wiimote is inconvenient, but it's far from hideous. And while the GC is missing a shoulder and a select button (not a huge fan of it's d-pad either, not clue what your deal with the C-Stick is tho), it's one of the prettiest controllers in existence.

I lament how more controllers don't look like that, since everything's become grey and black since then. If we're talking controllers that are straight up shitty, I would've posted...THE DUKE.

Just look at that beautiful abomination! It was a heavy piece of crap, but goddamn did it look spiffy. Who cares if the white and black buttons are fucking stupid, and the logo takes of 50% of the things real estate, this big ass beast has big neon X on it. How cool is that?

Like, I said, the thing was neat because the joystick could be removed to turn into a regular D-Pad. But just because they produced alternative options, doesn't make the CDi spoon not exists. And it still came default with a least the later version CDi (probably explaining why its so prevalent). So it's a controller, and its ugly, and its real.

Ya... they were fugly for sure.
I had a CD-i ages ago, not the point. And yeah, aside from being a badass CD player, the controllers were about the worst design I have ever seen. This was the one I got with it at first. And trust me, it worked as badly as it looked

ALSO this horrible Piece of shit. and yes, i had a Atari Jaguar as well

The damn thing looks upside down, and it isn't a bootleg, some big company saw it, said it was good and sent it to be manufactured
Was gonna say this. I love the controller like a mother. I know it's ugly, but I love it at the same time.
