Shutting down Halifax Studios, Ubisoft leads the first layoffs of 2026

Let's see, which games did that specific studio make.

Mobile games...

Yup, lol lmao.

It's not a surprise, there will be more coming. That studio was on the chopping block, whether they unionized or not. Halifax wasn't just making mobile games, they were making Assassin's Creeds' mobile spinoffs. AC, along with Far Cry and Rainbow 6, the money-making properties, are all going to Vantage Studios to be managed by Tencent. Ubisoft is only retaining IPs they and Tencent consider to be of lesser value.

Red Storm and Ubisoft Quebec, the teams handling Rainbow 6 and Far Cry, are probably next.

kind of weird. Normally, the mobile game division of any given company is one of the more profitable sectors of it due to the way that business model works.

TBH I'm not really all that familiar with many of the mobile games that ubisoft published, probably for good reasons lmao

Is anyone even doubting that Ubisoft wont make it to 2027?

Maybe in name, but everyone will be off and someone will take over, in the best scenario. In the worst, they will sell the IP to whoever wants them and close their doors.

not everyone can land the job of their dreams or the teams/projects they want
That's very true.

Many young and talented developers end up working on shovelware, mobile stuff or low-quality tie-ins because the bills won't wait on them and it's what's available to build up their resume, not what they actually want to do.

I actually really like this quote:

I can imagine some developers' dreams being crushed when they wanted to work on something like Donkey Kong Country, but they had to pay the bills, so they ended up working on junk instead" ~ Ross Scott

And honestly? I know EA are the undisputed kings of douchebaggery, but Ubisoft sure are presenting a nice challenge for the crown.
