I decided to open up a pikmin thread while watching @Kamako play through the game for the very first time. it will be the perfect place to discuss all things related to the wonderful, interesting and terrifying world of pikmin and dandori. feel free to share your thoughts on the series, ask questions about the gameplay and lore and share any theories and ideas about you think has happened on the mysterious world of PNF-404.

oh, also, you can post memes and far art here too. i'll be posting some stuff here from time to time as well.

Among all the games of the Pikmin Franchise that I have played only the 1 on the GameCube (Vanilla) and Wii (New Play Control!) and the 2 on the GameCube too. 🔴🟡🔵🚀
those are usually considered the best as well. make sure to check out some of the mods for both games. they can be quite wild and challenging as well.

I remember watching reviews of the second offering on TV (yes) and thinking that it was the raddest thing ever.

Sadly, I never owned the hardware to play it.
pikmin is the raddest series ever.
you can always check out a let's play of the games. some youtubers do full 100% playthoughs and a few of them check out some of the mods made for the games.

I played 1 and 2 on Gamecube they were great

I wish have a Switch to play 3 and 4
3 is pretty decent, especially the deluxe version, which not only include the dlc from the wii u version but an extra story mode as well as local co-op. it's the best version of 3 to play.
pikmin 4 is more of a mixed bag. it has a lot of useful features, but the story is a weird mix of a reboot and a sequel; my favorite character was supposed to be in the game but was removed because of the need to appeal to new fans, who will be confused by the jarring shift in the story about halfway through; the pikmin types are not utilized to their full extent. there's a bizarre limit on how many types that you can use at once, and the game will suggest which types to use; which takes away from strategizing. you know, the whole FUCKING point of a strategy game.
the game looks exquisite, runs pretty smooth too. areas are a bit bland and easy to mix up.
there's more to talk about, but i would end up spoiling the whole game if i did. Heff has a nearly 4 hour video going over the whole game in insane detail. he even made a castaway tier list while working on that video.

I'm late to the franchise myself. I started with 4. I have them all on Switch, and I plan to make my way through them all but I'm still pretty not great at them. I got 100% on Pikmin 4, but that would make sense given how it's more casual and forgiving overall.

My favourite thing is finding new real-world objects and seeing what weird name it gives them in the Piklopedia.

Watching @Kamako play yesterday made me want to try the series. I completely ignored it back when I saw the commercial for the first one, I didn't think it would be my thing, honestly.

I suppose Pikmin 1 is the best one to start?

sort of. it is not new player friendly, coming at the tail end of the "get good, scrub" era of gaming. pikmin 3 and 4 are much more newbie friendly; pikmin 4 especially. otachi literally breaks the game and a lot of enemies are much easier overall. only the night missions and the final boss are real challenges.
pikmin 1 is the smallest though, in terms of area and enemy variety; but it is more atmospheric and weirdly calming despite the urgency of the plot; which one could argue adds a lot to it overall.
i'd say either check out @Kamako's playthrough, mainly part 1; or maybe peanutbuttergamer and spacehampster's let's play. you only to see a few days of play to get an overall idea of what the game is like. or you can just jump straight in and hit the ground running. the choice is yours.

that's neat, but do be careful while playing the switch ports of 1 and 2. those are the wii ports and somehow, they added in more glitches when they were doing the original ports. and the already present glitches are more active, somehow. nothing game shattering, but they can be quite annoying, especially for those who do deathless runs.
i love seeing the crazy names for the treasures in both 2 and 4. you find an ocarina and they call it a bathtub; lid to a pickle jar is an alien billboard. my favorite is the slice of ham being called "Meat of Champions". ham is one of my favorite meats, so it's both funny and cool that they called it that.

I started with Pikmin 2 back on the gamecube. When I was younger, the atmosphere really drew me in. Nowadays, I know all about the scripted events on certain days (when bosses can be fought, which enemies start appearing later on, etc.) but as a kid I didn't know anything about that. I remember exploring the Perplexing Pool, only to have a Beady Long Legs spawn in and scare the shit out of me; stuff like that really made the world feel alive and foreign to me as a kid.

yeah, that was an unexpected jump scare. i was playing a mod, don't off handily remember which one; i landed in the perplexing pool, and immediately while at base, heard the boss music start up. i started panicking. a raging bloyster had spawned in where a regular toady bloyster had been. fortunately it was in the water, but it showed up everyday while i was there. it was quite nerve wracking.

I'll definitely check the rest of @Kamako 's playthrough and see if I can start with the first one but your answer makes me think that 4 might be a good starting point just to ease into the gameplay...

oh yeah, the gameplay is the absolute smoothest in 4. there are several very useful functions to call pikmin back to you. your cursor has a decent range; pikmin jump up onto otachi when you get up on him, so your whole squad has excellent mobility and speed. you get an upgrade to call pikmin to where you are at; i think there was one to tell them to return to base on their own. otachi can pick pikmin and command his own squad as well. the pikmin sing from time to time. and quite a few more upgrades but i won't spoil everything.

I'm pretty sure Pikmin is #34832 on my list of games to get around to playing one day ::sadkirby
Pikmin 1 can be beaten in under a day, even by a pretty new player. It's specifically set up to be very replayable, so it's very easy to pick up on a whim.

I'll always advocate for playing a series in release order 99% of the time, watching the mechanics evolve over time gives you more of an appreciation for the newer games, and you won't go into previous entries frustrated at missing mechanics

Love these games, though I've never actually finished one. I find the in game time limits kind of annoying, but otherwise think they're great.
that is the main point; fitting in with the overall theme of the first and third game. time is of the essence.
you might like the 2nd and 4th games more. there is still the time limit per day, but there is much less of a rush to get things done; and when you are in the caves, there is no time limit. you limited on how many pikmin that you can have in the caves, but that is the trade off.
