True MMORPG that are still alive

Personally I've been playing City of Heroes: Homecoming because it has an RP community but I think what you're looking for is Ulitima Online: Outlands.

Is the shard that much different mechanically from official servers? It's still a game originally from 1997...

To make a long answer short: Yes. The Official servers are also dead and poorly managed! Outlands actually has a thriving player base, it's essentially like OSR where the changes that have been made are in the spirit of the old design ethos and it's community focused. Telling anyone to sub to official servers would be trolling them! OP specifically wants an actual MMORPG, Outlands is very close to what Ultima Online felt like back in the day and it actually has a community.

Sorry, I wasn't talking about the community, I was talking about the mechanical gameplay.

I don't think going from FFXIV as a first MMORPG to an unofficial UO server would be the logical transition for most people, just in terms of the game itself.

You're missing the point. The mechanical gameplay requires a community to even begin functioning in any meaningful way, modern servers simply don't have that. In fact they've completely neutered what matters to even form it because it's owned by people that don't understand why the game died to begin with. Most old school MMORPGS are essentially just sandboxes and chat rooms designed to get you interact with the people around you, you're talking about a game that was literally designed from top down to be experienced with a functioning community and saying it doesn't matter with out one. It absolutely does because the mechanics quite literally revolve around that, and that's not hyperbole, UO in it's true form is a genuine sandbox.

As for logical? What? Some of the MMORPGs OP listed like XI Horizon are WAY more hardcore, to the point of absurdity. I'd never recommend anyone play classic XI and I came from that era. Secondly, the design ethos of old school MMORPGs doesn't revolve around being mechnically challenging or complex, that's kind of the point. They weren't raiding sims. They're a social experience first, nothing in Outlands is anywhere near as challenging as XIV or any of the MMORPGs he listed, the gameplay is extremely simple. Outlands is far, far, FAR, better experience than official and there's a reason it's thriving. If I recommended official that would be griefing.

Hey, just wanted to share a MU Online server — MU Renaissance. It’s old-school (Season 2-3, x1 EXP, no resets), feels really close to how MU used to be back in the day. Chill community too. If you’re into retro MMOs, might be worth checking out: MU Renaissance

I remember exploring early to late 2000s MMO games like trickster online, windslayer, mini fighters, and other like these games. I also remember there were MMOs made with rpg maker characters.

As some one that played mmo sense 1999. WTF is a true mmo ?????

Anyway there are allot of old mmo games still around.
Ultima online still around
Vanguard saga of Heros
ArchLord online
Dark ages the oldest mmo I know all the way back from 1995

- Horizon XI: The private server of Final Fantasy 11 that usually have above 1k in players. It is caped on level 75 and even if it shows it ages in many systems it is really refreshing with what we have now.
I'm surprised you haven't tried the Eden Server

To quote Zooey:
"Final Fantasy XI - Eden server. Got all the way to max level on this server. Its classic FFXI, but theres still plenty to do and level. The game is very grindy, and it can be hard at times to find people, but eventually people will join you to do the content, just takes patience."

GW2 maybe, it's free and you can buy the expansion later if you like the game.
I know others but all of them have the same problem, they are p2w and aren't worthy to play now days.
