Hello, everyone. I'm a teacher and I really like using games to illustrate ideas. I grew up in the 90s and didn't have a really good PC until I was an adult, but I've always looked for gaming magazines. I remember seeing a lot about the “Total War” series. My favorite is Total War Rome, both for the gameplay and the challenges. How about you? Do you enjoy strategic combat with a focus on historical narrative?

I've just recently been playing TW Shogun 2 and finished a campaign as Takeda Shingen.
Honestly thinking about it I really prefer Total War types of strategy games to ones like Age of Empires or Civilization.
I've been thinking about trying out the Nobunaga's Ambition series but the Nintendo Switch Online versions of the SNES games have no manuals and it's impossible to guess your way into this genre. Fortunately a couple of the latest ones were localized into English on Steam.

Hot damn, I'd have loved a teacher that approaches their work like you back in the day!
The most we could hope for as a mixup to our textbooks was our teacher throwing some chalk in annoyance when the class wouldn't pipe down. 😅

The Total War series is one of my all-time favourites!
Kept the RTS spirit alive after the genre's premature (and luckily temporary) demise back in the day. Rome, Shogun and Medieval 2 are absolute masterpieces.
I think those games and Age of Empires 1, 2 and later Mythology were the reason I always had good grades in history class - so I can definitely confirm that they make for great teaching material!

I kind of miss the more intricate grand campaign management mechanics of the older titles in the newer, more battle-focused TW games, but it's still a fantastic series.

Man, you hit the nail on the head... now that the Switch 2 has a mouse, I think games like Total War could become more popular

Tangentially related, but since we're talking RTS and the capacity for videogames to teach historical information - Godsworn:

This one is definitely more on the WC3, which is to say action RTS, side of things and is also very much fantastical in its setting, but it got me to look into the Northern Crusades and Baltic mythology, which I barely knew anything about until then, so it's definitely another one that can serve as a good source of inspiration.

You're like the teacher I wanted back in the day. Anyway, I've never tried Total War games, but I love strategy games like this. They look amazing too

In general I don't like realistic military settings. Even historical. I think Total War really shined when they went all in with Warhammer fantasy. Sames thing with Civilization when they released Alpha Centauri IMO.

But as far as teaching is concerned your post made me think about an old french game called Empire of the Ants (Les Fourmis). It's a strategy game with a light serious gaming angle about biology, should be good candidate for your classroom. It released in 2000 but they did a remake last year that looked interesting, but haven't played.

Total war games i should try them Thx for reminding me im something of your number 1 RTS fan but i kinda fell off nowdays in terms of playing my main genre which is RTS now total war aint exactly RTS rather grand strategy i think but still worth a shot

I only ever played Empire: Total War, and it was pretty fun from what I remember.
Generally, I don't play these kinds of strategy games though, so I don't know too much about the format.
