(This was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be)

It's difficult for me to rank them in a list, so I'll just list a few in no particular order off the top of my head.

Final Fantasy VI
Chrono Trigger
Live A Live
Fire Emblem Series
Shining Force 1 and 2
Vandal Hearts
Paper Mario 1 and 2
Final Fantasy Tactics
Front Mission 3
Fallout 1 and 2
Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 (haven't played 3 yet)

My personal favorites in no meaningful order: Robotrek, Chrono Trigger, Lufia 2, Final Fantasy 6, Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy 8, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy 9, Pokemon Red/Blue and Persona 3 Fes.

In no particular order whatsoever:

Dragon Quest VIII (PS2)
Baldur's Gate II (PC)
Y's VIII Lacrimosa of Dana (Played PS Vita version)
Fallout 3 GOTY (PC)
Divinity: Original Sin 2 (PC)
X Men Legends II (Played PSP version)
Operencia: The Stolen Sun (PC)
Vagrant Story (PS1)
Persona 3 FES (PS2)
Dragon Age Origins (PC)

In no order at all:
Final Fantasy VIII
Chrono Cross
Grandia
Breath Of Fire IV
Shin Megami Tensei IV
Persona 4
Custom Robo Arena
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
The Legend Of Heroes: Trails In The Sky
Grand Knights History

Hard Mode: Only 1 game not just per series, but per developer...

Chrono Trigger - SquareSoft / Square Enix
Xenoblade Chronicles - Monolith Soft
Suikoden II - Konami
Persona 5 Royal - Atlus
Skies of Arcadia - Overworks / SEGA
Grandia - Game Arts
Earthbound - Ape Studios / Nintendo
Shadow Hearts: Covenant - Nautilus
The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero - Falcom
Blue Dragon - Mistwalker

Due to the nature of Chrono Trigger's creation (staff involved plus current nature of the IP holder) and placement on this list, this prevented me from including any of the then stand-alone Enix titles. Not including my favorite game ever, however, was not an option.

Hmmmm............no order

Is SOTN considered an RPG?
Allow me to state reason for including SOTN in this list. Truly it's an action game with rpg elements if you want to boil it down, right? Case can also be made that It's not really strictly speaking one or the other in terms of genre but there are a number of good reasons to consider it an rpg as well imo.

1) Progression - the leveling system usually classifies a game as a role playing game or not. SOTN has lots of ways to beef up your character with items, weapons, relics that you must collect during the course of your adventure.

2) Equipment - You must grow stronger to compete with the challenges the game throws at you. You have familiars which level with you as well and the game and your character are heavily customizable which is another feature that takes it from a normal action game into rpg territory. Equipment is also a part of a games progression, after all.

3) Themes - Castlevania SOTN draws heavily upon one of the great historical sources for rpg lore - the works of JRR Tolkien, and these works imbue the character of the game in such a way that it takes it deep into fantasy territory- A territory that's almost always considered the domain of the rpg genre. From a game design standpoint, I think the main reason for the inclusion of lore from the world of Arda was to make the game more appreciable to people who enjoy playing role playing games and understand the source material. In my case it definitely worked. The inclusion of the one ring (or two if you are an obsessive collector like I am), Nauglamir, Fist of Tulkas and other lore-building elements found in the world of Tolkien, broaden the subject matter in SOTN and elevate it beyond being a vampiric action game and changes the atmosphere to FEEL more like a role-playing game.

I'm sure there are other factors but they'd be a bit of a stretch. Anyways sorry for writing a small novel. It's just the way I feel about it. Cheers
