I have a theory that it's "raiders" in Japan due to how they wrote "Tomb Raider" in Katakana. "Reida-su" (Reidaasu)
The "su" is usually written for plural like "Raiders" from what I've seen. So they simply just adjusted the English title for consistency with Katakana.
Makes sense, though in katakana it would simply be "rei-da" in opposed to "rei-da-ru".

Yeah, they probably adapted the name using the pronunciation of their syllabaries, to something probably "sounding better" for them.

But later, they adapted the name to the western one (with Raider in singular), starting with TR2.
Maybe because the number 2 ("tsu", in "japanese english") is similar to "su". And in Japan, they use a lot those "english number adaptations" in english-named videogames.

So... "Toumu Raida su tsu" probably sounds "worst" than "Toumu Raida Tsu", which (I suspect) probably is how they pronounced the sequel.
Or maybe not, who knows... I'm speculating "very hard" here.

Maybe Eidos just wanted the same fucking name of the franchise everywhere, and pushed "Victor" to change the japanese name when they released the sequel.
Heh, makes sense. Thanks for that insight with TR2!

The last image is very important!

Also I never knew the first game was titled Tomb Raiders in Japan, is kinda how Tails Adventures was named Tails Adventure in the US.

This game is the Japanese version of the Tomb Raider that we know in the West obviously.

But for some reason the title of the game is pluralized as Raiders and not Raider in singular.
