Thoughts on Zorin OS?

I've always heard that Mint was the best version of Linux for windows people your probably best off with that. as for gaming your probably best off with a Windows 10 partition. I'm not Linux guy myself so take this with a grain of salt.

Normally you'd be absolutely right! the problem is that disk space is very tight for the person I'm helping, so they needed an OS that was as lightweight as possible.

That's a lot to take in for a Windows normie like me, but I really appreciate the information! distro lineage is something that I've always found interesting to look into.
If i'm being honest, linux "pro's" make linux sound far harder than it is, even on garuda linux most of the issues i've had you could easily search in brave search for a fix for (brave search imo is less censored and bought than googles imo).

The main thing to keep in mind about linux to understand how much you probably use it daily, most servers, alot of normal hardware like atm's, cash registers, your cell phone etc use it.
I believe most AI uses linux too, which is probably why nvidia has been trying to improve it's linux drivers as of late.
The playstation operating system since at least the ps3 has been linux based, and the switch uses a BSD operating system, which is UNIX based, same as linux's core.
Mac osx and IOS are both based on unix i believe as well.

In other words, 99% of all computers use linux, it's just really the desktop market and some special fields that use windows.

Steam os is arch based btw, forgot that in my last post, we might get steam os sometime this year which will probably be on par with bazzite or garuda.

There's a lot.
Distro watch kinda sucks though if i'm being honest, it's not really about the quality of the distro but how many people hit up the distro, kinda useless for someone who just wants to game on linux.

You're right, Linux has much more presence in the computing world than most realize. Even though my daily driver is Win 10, I do have that awareness.

Yeah it does, I just thought the chart at that link was cool. There aren't as many actually notable distros as the site would make you think.

Another one I think was pretty popular with gamers/newbies was Pop OS. Never tried it myself though.

DistroWatch + Phoronix.

The former is for knowing, the latter is for learning.

Learning to Know, Knowing by Learning.

Mental technique that is increasingly feeble these days, in increasingly feeble minds. (unfortunately)

Isn't that the Truth? i have used it long enough to use it as well as Windows. but the "Pro's" act like making it Sound like "Oh you have to be a l33t haxzors to use linux" is some big Achievement. also i hate leet speak, just using it for the point.

And alot of Linux user's are Stuck up hoity toity Pricks to. Like they are to good to Answer something, someone just Learning is wanting to know.
Wanting to Learn is Never a bad thing.

Now more than ever, Linux over the last 5-10 years, has become almost as user Friendly as Windows, hell maybe more so. Just without the Bloat and Big Brother Aesthetic.. And spyware... and Data harvesting... and 1984.....

I Had Pop OS on a Older laptop some time ago, probably 5 years ago, maybe 3 i forget now. i Didn't find it to my Liking.
Of course, that's me. someone else like Rageburners friend may love it.

Thats the Great thing about Linux, you have a choice. its not just "Windows 10 with a new wallpaper"
you can customize you're Daily how you like

Pop os! was good, but at this point it's out of date, mainly because canonical wants is working on the cosmic desktop environment and wants to use it for the newest update of it.

I appreciate the great input everyone, it's very generous. The machine has been running well so far - previously their windows installation has been unbootable and the system reported multiple errors in both disks, but I'm thinking the OS integrity became compromised.

Now I'm currently stumped trying to create a local file-sharing connection.

Can't count on file sharing as i don't use stuff like that, but you can check disk integrity in linux with Gsmartcontrol.

That's right. I I set up Samba but I must be missing something. The Windows side expects credentials but I have no idea wuat those are supposed to be (using tye Linux user information results in it not working).

Use localsend then. works across everything, from Mac OS to android phones.

Atleast, that'll get things moving along. till you get everything else set up

Thank you so much, both of you! I'll give those a try, and probably uninstall samba while I'm at it.

I'm facing a bit of a strange issue on a different front. When trying to set a game up on Lutris, it runs fine the first time, but from the second time onward I get an error message claiming the executable is missing, and even if I punch in the path, the game doesn't start.

Would Lutris and Bottles adversely affect one another? should I use one but not the other?
