Movies Thoughts on Disney's Atlantis (2001)?

Atlantis was the last Disney film I ever watched during its theatrical release, and also the last one I truly liked (well, until the release of Zootopia more than a decade later).

I remember thinking it was great fun but man, oh, man! That isn't the popular consensus at all... So much so that I actually have found two distinct "camps" when it comes to appraising it: there's those who forgot it ever existed and those who only remember it as yet another misstep on the long list of blunders that took Disney into the new millennium one shaky step at time.

I'll admit that it barely survived a rewatch with me, but I still have a soft spot for it.

I'll admit that I haven't seen it in a while, but I remember really liking it. I remember loving the animation and the visuals, as well as enjoying a lot of the characters. If I also remember, it suffered from a weak villain, but that's kind of a Disney trademark these last few decades.

This is one of those movies that make me miss 2D Disney animation. You could still get it in shows like Amphibia, Gravity Falls & the Ghost and Molly McGee, but 3D just doesn't hit quite the same. Although, there are still really good 3D animated movies.

Also, more people should see Treasure Planet. That is a fantastic early 2000s Disney movie that should get more love.

I like it. But I will admit that this story is bit more darker compared to others (at least those that are Hunchback of Notre Dame and also not being a typical musical like the others really make this one different from the rest of the 90s films) and has an interesting mix of CGI and 2D animation like Treasure Planet.

Although, did not blame people for thinking about this being one of Disney's Misstep when you consider that Disney was purposely doing that for a bunch of their 2d films in the 2000s to get on the CGI craze. This and Treasure Planet are the poor unfortunate souls that Disney used to make that happen. Atlantis was poor marketed and released around the time of Shrek, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and The Fast and The Furious was released.

Overall, Atlantis is a fun movie, I recommend it. Just NEVER watch the sequel because it's just the poorly stitched together corpse of the cancelled animated series planned at the time.

Haven't watched that in a long time... I might later cuz you reminded me. I remember liking it, and also having collected a set of Happy Meal toys of it back as a kid. Wonder if it's as good as I remember as an adult.

Yep, most Disney movies got one or two sequels rushed out straight to VHS/DVD back in those days. Most of the Disney movies I have on Blu-Ray came in a set with their, usually rubbish, sequels. Mulan, Lilo & Stitch, Atlantis.

I really do wonder why they ever did that -- aside from Lady & The Tramp II (which I adore), all their DTV stuff is so unbelievably soulless...

It's a pretty sold science fantasy action flick. I think the character and mechanical designs by Mike Mignola are really solid and make it feel like something distinct from Disney's typical fare. Joss Whedon also contributed to the script and he held back a bit. This has quipping, but not to the degree of Joss-tice League or Age of Ultron. At this point in his career Whedon recognized that not everyone needed to make lame jokes every 30 seconds. Animation is also great with veteran animators doing what they do best. The characters are expressive and charming in their mannerisms and body language thanks to this.

In addition to that there is CGI integrated into the film; mainly in the vehicles, an 'ornery mechanical lobster, and the stone guardians of Atlantis. I applaud how Atlantis is something separate from Greece, making it unique. I would love an RPG in this world to really get into the nitty gritty of the technology and culture of Atlantis.

From what I remember it was supposed to be a series on Disney Channel. But since the movie didn't do too well the shelved it. The sequel is the show chopped to bits and Frankenstien-ed together

It is one of the best animated movie Disney has ever come up with. It came at a time when anime is on the rise and Disney proved that they compete with it.

Sadly a lot of people dismiss it all because it doesn’t follow the “Disney Princess” formula. Most regrettably they don’t do great stuff like this anymore.
