Thoughts and Opinions on the term "slop"

I don't particularly care. We used to say 'shovelware' and 'asset flip'. Now we say 'slop'. The term works and even if someone can't exactly define it everyone knows what kind of games are being described.
We did, and we still do. It's weird for me, of all people, to be posting something against AI or rather, calling it names. Now, I’m going to throw out the usual arguments. Yes, it’s a tool has its place and can be useful. That said, no, it is not the be all and end all of anything. It should not be used to replace writers, artists, CGI technicians, and artists. It should never be used in place of a human because it just doesn’t have imagination nor a soul so to speak. It simply can’t outdo a human.

Yes, in terms of speed, it will draw or generate circles around a human, that’s not even a contest.
A high-end, good AI can produce a thousand or more images in the time it takes a human artist to finish one good image. But I would rather have that one good image.

Should we absolutely hate AI? No, not at all. Again, it has its place.
For funny memes, some dumb videos, helping people with work, or even curing diseases. AI is welcome for those things. But it’s when people just use it to be lazy, typing in prompts and not doing the work that’s where the problem lies.

I have no problem with someone using AI to make something for their own use or enjoyment that’s whatever. But when you start flooding the market with just "Prompt, Prompt, Prompt, Prompt" and little else, and the outcome is even less than subpar, yet people think it’s great that’s where the line should be drawn.

So, do I think it’s slop?
Not all of it. Do I think 98% is?

A Resounding Fuck Yes.

Even though I can understand why people are using this word a lot more recently, it has become one of the few words that I just dislike seeing and whatnot. almost anything that can be considered low quality even if it may seem intentional by the creator can be misinterpreted as Slop and there will be people that'll likely be blind by that fact and call it slop nonetheless.

Did I find the stealth AI debate thread?

It really does feel lazy rather than clever.

I don't like one-word answers given as opinions, and this one word is all some people would ever say about this-or-that topic.

It's rather tiresome.
Would you say that it made the discourse... Sloppy?

I'll see myself out.

Slop is real, but it's being over used. There's AI slop. There's the slop that Disney puts out for Marvel and StarWars. There's the slop that most AAA game devs put out that seems to only serve to personally check a box for an activist that got hired by some malignant HR department. And there's kids throwing around terms like Unc Slop just to troll adults.

I actually do not mind that term. In fact, I actually find it to be a rather apt descriptor for the current state of media in general. Sure, we still get absolute gems once in a blue moon like Brave Bang Bravern, Gundam SEED Freedom, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and the live-action Sonic movies, however, all that is outweighed by the sheer megatons of garbage that get dumped into our already quite frankly nihlistic dystopian landfill by greedy corpos each year.

As Someone who had taken to the term way before it became popular i feel it's a word that's lost a lot of it's weight since i feel it's being used for everything you don't like when i used it it was for something so awful so gross so disgusting only animals would engage with it essentially but now it's i don't like this thing so it's slop

It's becoming overused to the point of losing any meaning, and will likely be replaced with another term in a few years as these things often do.
True.

Even "Mid" got overused then no longer said.

I also dislike that people use the term "friendslop" for any indie game with an emphasis on cooperative multiplayer.

Friendslop
Parryslop
Rollslop
Etc.

It's just become a term to dismiss anything a person subjectively dislikes without needing to explain why. I've even heard someone say "You only like it because it's qualityslop!" before.

"Friendslop" makes it sound like the person saying it is alone and doesn't have anyone to play games with. Even if I prefer solo games that's just silly to imply that one with an emphasis on multi is bad by itself.

Or maybe there are people who think the only worthy MP games are those that are about battling against others, not about cooperating.

As for parry and rolling I agree there are too many games that tries to be like a SoulsBorne without having everything that FromSoft had yet I won't use that term for the sake of using it.

I've even heard someone say "You only like it because it's qualityslop!" before.
That's very idiotic...

Friendslop kinda fits because those games do not make for good single player experiences. However many of those games are actually good if indeed played with friends. It needs its own Genre with how prevalent those games have become due to streamers.

And related to that note; a term I would like to add or have refined is something to do with the new influx of HorrorSlop. It's become quite the trend to see many very cheap, short, horror titles under $10 intended to be viewed from a Streamer's Playthrough than actually played through your self. There are many quality titles in this genre like those from Puppet Combo, Torture Star Video, or Mike Klubnika. However there are many many copycats out there that produce nothing but.... slop.

If the game is meant to be played in multi then what's the issue? It's like saying that The Elder Scrolls being focused on solo is a "singleslop" because making a mod to play in mp wouldn't be a great experience...

Left 4 Dead can be qualified as such because the AI partners will never be as good as real humans.

Being made for multiplayer isn't really a genre per se...

it's literally just slop - quickly produced, low quality garbage. nothing deep about it, same meaning as the "food".
This is pretty much the definition of it, slop is, essentially, table scraps, absolute garbage produced easily at the lowest cost and quality possible.
AI is generally considered to be the biggest producer of "slop" these days, but it can apply to almost anything that is utterly irredeemably low quality.
