Recently decided to give the game a shot only to be uh... very much "filtered" by its puzzle design (for lack of a better word).
I don't quite get what makes the game click after playing it on and off through most of this month; Ive found it to be rather frustrating and unenjoyable so far but I do want to see it to the end.
So with that fairly negative experience I wondered what you guys though of the game and maybe if I could get some tips to progress past the gate of guidance or hints for any overly ambiguous puzzles later on to get any leg up on them.

(Hell, naming any good guides would be good too.)

it's great game but the challenge of it's puzzles is very much real.

I've played the original freeware version of La-Mulana, the remake, and its sequel. I have only ever gotten halfway through any of them at best. I love them, but these games are Nintendo Hard. LM2 is more fair in some ways (mostly) while retaining that challenge. If you can believe it, the remake is even more dangerous than the freeware version, due to adding instant death traps!

Needless to say, this game is meant to be old-school and whoop your ass, let alone make you confused and wonder what the hell to do next. My best advice for guides are two separate things.

First off, playthroughs by the guy who introduced me to the series in the first place: DeceasedCrab. I was idly searching for chain whip weapons on Youtube one day, found the Inferno Cavern playthrough as he gains the weapon in Freeware LM1, and was hooked ever since. His greeting, "Hey La-Mulanites~!" is still etched into my mind. This guy knows his Mulana.

Below is the first video of his playthrough of the remake, which I assume you're playing due to the screenshot. It should be part of his playlist for the whole remake. As I learn well from others' examples, here's hoping this'll help.

Secondarily, here's a text-based walkthrough to reference. Due to the semi-non-linear nature of the game, having multiple guides to reference could help. Different people discover or take different routes, so one's mileage with just one of those routes may vary.

And so. Here is a Steam walkthrough, with spoilers you can mouse over to show, or keep hidden as desired. I went with sharing Cheshire's walkthrough, as @RussTech suggested.

Good luck!

one of the best games i've ever played but i refuse to play the maze of galious which inspired it.
i am very much too dumb to have solved some of the riddles in the game by myself but any time i made progress on my own it was a very rewarding feeling.
great randomizer too.
regarding the gate of guidance specifically: i recommend reading the manual to the game. it has some information that will be very important.
it took me until late into ps4's life for this game to click for me.
i originally started playing it on wiiware.
it can take a very long time to click!

It's a great game, but play with a guide, or you'll suffer an aneurysm. I recommend Cheshire's Steam guide.

Woa those are some great resources! Thank you all so much!
I am playing EX which was the updated version released on vita.
No matter how this goes I do want to check out 2 in the future, from what ive seen, it gives out a lot more hints so figuring stuff out shouldn't be as hard on me.

Thank you very much once again!
