I think the only hardware I'm buying in the foreseeable future is a Steam Machine when they launch it in a few months.

I don't need a cutting edge top end battle station PC, I've done that shit multiple times over the years and the returns are increasingly not there as all gaming is becoming ubiquitous. I don't give a fuck about the Nintendo franchises I grew up with anymore. They demolished the best parts of Zelda.

Half of the console gaming industry's talent that made it interesting is in a grave yard or on the way there within a decade. I don't care for any big brands. There is no reason for me to buy consoles. Xbox was getting the benefit of the doubt, but now they take 10 year streaks of offering disappointment, they shut down the Movie & TV apps that keep them slightly relevant in a home theatre setup, and they constantly release shitty games.


If Switch 2 gets a headless version, I might get one down the road to play something stupid and overpriced like Donkey Kong. They have that sliver of potential left to getting my money.

Sony failed to monopolize their IPs, they had a pantheon of characters they could call upon for a safe 10-15 games every generation and they fumbled it mega hard. Sony All Stars was the death nail in the Sony catalogue, the proof that neither corporate nor consumer cared about this legacy.

If I had to guess, it's multiple things that all happened but they didn't plan for some of it. I think the 2020 release was timed to capitalize on what they perceived as market saturation for the PS4, perhaps with the outdated notion of console releases being 5ish years apart (though PS3 was 6 years after PS2 and PS4 was 7 years after PS3???), whether it was ready or not. Then covid hit the world and the markets all changed, be it slightly or drastically, but they stayed the course when no one would've blamed them for delaying a little bit.

I'm still not really sure of the purpose of the Steam Machine, when the Steam Deck exists? I'm sure it's stronger, but for me, the entire benefit of the Deck was it's portability and being able to plug into my TV (without having to risk transporting a bulky tower or laptop).

Depends on which ones you're talking about. Usually the ones that do make the exact same mistake(s) tend to be forgotten about or just fall into the crowd and blends into the background.

Another point is that most indies tend to make way too much homages with added stuff but are still way too much like fan-games than stand alone games overall .

That is my perspective on indies but i could be wrong on that point.

Some do too much homages. Yet many others don't or manage to get it right within reason. I still seen more successes than failures on the indie side. I always try to focus on the indies that get it right or leave a much more positive influence. Not to say you can't focus on the wrongs, but don't get too obsessed on them. Otherwise, you'll lose that balance and just assume it's nearly the same for every single indie game maker or game out there. Use a balanced touch.

You can't just make a game like "Final Fantasy 98 + Mario Rpg with a little bit of Earthbound for spice" and indie game genuinely has to bring something unique to the table to really standout (most often it's their art style or soundtrack, something corporate wouldn't take a risk on for a larger budget product).

If there's any game I can think of (despite not being really "indie") that's just AWASH in homage, it's Sonic Mania. It's great that it got made, and it's really well done (better than Sonic CD, and especially Sonic 4) but it really is just Sonic 3 again, y'know?

However, I've become addicted to stuff like Look Outside, Fear & Hunger (mostly the first one), and Undertale (regrettably), because I'm becoming obsessed with the idea of games where I don't need to fight anybody if I don't want to.
