There haven't been any good games since...

Tell me where I implied that.
I didn't say you did, I was merely picking on you as the (nearest fit for) the type of opinion I dislike most. Namely the "I'm the most open minded, therefore the best" opinion. Nothing personal, it's just a sucky opinion.

Edit: In fact, I implied the line you took issue with. It was the whole point of what I was trying to say.

I don't think there's a cut-off year for that. The good games are still coming out. People like to think that there were more good games in the past, when in reality it only seems that way because the bad games are largely forgotten with the passage of time.

But why would anyone even have a "cutoff" year? Why deprive yourself in that way? Juist play or watch or listen to something if it falls in your lap and interests you. Modern AAA gaming (including Nintendo) disgusts me, but I'm not going to avoid something that pops up just because "It's past the year 2004" or something.
I played bloodmoney a month or two ago solely because the second game was so shit and boring XD granted it did remind me that i didn't actually play the 1st one so played that it was good.

I would say a cutoff point for me is probably 2019 or 2021 more so triple A. But idk if i truly have a cutoff point though because i still will play some indie games that interest me. but triple A is fucked. I've played Monster hunter rise on switch and it's literally unplayable there's not an easy way to change the controls without changing the switch system controls screw that. so i couldn't even play a single quest properly which sucked. the second one is Nintendo switch sports it's shit they fucked up bowling so badly and permanently removed 100 pin bowling my favorite sport btw and removed when you accidentally threw back the ball the crowd would jump that's gone. absolute trash. sorry for long rant .

I would too if the golden age of gaming hadn't come in 2004 lol. After Sega Genesis-era I was not impressed with PS1-era much even after I had my 3 favourite games Persona 1, Racing Lagoon and Breath of Fire 4. PS2 didn't start strong. PC games weren't really great but at least we had legendary Deus Ex 1, Fallout 1-2, Redline, Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption and such. The most popular games at the time were more like same shit, not better than previous games but somehow got popular just because they are better among rubbish and this is what new generation kids knows. For example I never liked Half Life games and early GTA games. But then boom Unreal Tournament 2004, boom GTA San Andreas, boom Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, boom Jade Empire, boom Painkiller, boom Silent Hill 4, boom The Movies, boom Radiata Stories, boom Rogue Galaxy, boom NFS Underground 2, boom Metal Gear Solid 3, boom Shadow of the Colossus, boom Battlefield 2, boom Guitar Hero, boom Steambot Chronicles, boom BOOM BOOOOOOM. No more please!!!! I had to sell my kidney to keep up buying all these legendary games!!! Show mercy I beg of you... and the video game industry fell into coma with stupid Bioware dating sim "RPGs", stupid online games, stupid pew pew shit, stupid PS3 cinematic games and its wannabe games on PC while rarely we played decent games like Persona 4, Dishonored 1, Alpha Protocol, Fallout New Vegas and Radiant Historia and then Freedom Wars and Witcher 3 released and video game history died for good in 2016 after Persona 5 released lol.

If da golden age of gaming 2004-2005 had to be a gif it would be this lolol:

Nah i would say gaming died after breath of the wild came out. considering Nintendo and other gaming companies obsession with open world games since 2017. like who thought it was a good idea to make mario kart open world?? 🤦‍♀️

Ugh, games haven’t been good since just now. I mean what’s released since then? Nothing!
Bloodmoney is good but that's indie I'm talking about the 1st one btw

PC FPS (and gaming to a lesser extent) hasn't been truly revolutionising since Half-Life² and Crysis if you want to take the "pure" computer gaming.

But we can see how the current generation is just an extension of the 7th gen. Cyberpunk is a big game but that is just "The Witcher with guns".

Even GTA VI will be a vastly more improved GTA IV when you scrape the surface, ditto with TeS VI being Oblivion and Skyrim but more refined.

Some could even argue that gaming peaked around the 6th generation because new genres are being made and gaming evolved fast.

I'd say about 2012 for me in a loose sense of dropping out from the "mainstream" and "current" gaming sphere. Mass Effect 3 was such a big and utter letdown that it soured me on "mainstream" gaming and was around when I dipped out on it after moving to PC. 2015 reinforced that with Fallout 4 being the first game I'd pre-ordered since ME3 and being another colossal disappointment.

Do I still play games released after 2012? Yes. Do I chase them the moment they come out? No. I've pre-ordered two games since then and both were ones I knew would be fine. Now? It's usually years later and 50-75% off when I check out a game, especially when I've got so much to play already.

I don't know what year it was in particular but probably when the industry shifted from selling mostly complete products to selling vehicles for DLC content. I think it was probably around the time the ps4/xboxone? came out. I just remember a bunch of games coming out that were objectively worse, more incomplete and more expensive than the iterations that came out before them and that was pretty much my first time seeing that in a move to a new gaming generation.

I think late 2011 is where dlc was more common i could be wrong though.

Never happens to me to me I find new fun and interesting games. Im not sure what you all want from games that today games can´t offer. Sooo many great indie games hell even good AA and AAA games we get now and then.

Stardrew valley
Hell divers II
Granblue fantasy Relink one damn epic JRPG
Even fighting cames are even better today than they use to be like King of Fighter 15 and so on
Lunacid
Little Wood
Space marine 2
Warhammer 40k Boltgun

I need to know what are modern games lacking that games in the 80-90 have ? Is it you hate modern graphics ? Or they don´t make games you like ? I mean im sad we get no new proper Warcraft RTS or new GOOD C&C.

I need to know what makes you stuck in the past ?? I grew up with gaming sense the NES up till today and I honestly think games have become way better than they use to be.

I love snes I live the PS2 and so on but I shall be honesty my god the amount of shitty games 80-90s is staggering that if you honestly look at them all very few of they are quality good games yes there are many good game´s but you got 5 bad games for every good ones.

What are you missing ?

Mainstream gaming's golden age is long gone for sure, but I'd argue that we're in an indie golden age. Balatro, Stardew Valley, Risk of Rain 2, Hollow Knight, the list goes on and on.

I think already at 2009 gaming stopped evolving, with overall smaller output focused on AAA, very few new ideas and even sequels started to streamline and cut stuff to try pushing for larger publics and justify the huge budgets so they stopped actually going forward design-wise. Also mid-sized studios started to go bankrupt and we started to get indies made by teams of 1 or 2 people instead, which I honestly wasn't a big fan of. But I think 2013 is the first year that there's like less that 10 games I care about.

because the industry expect games to keep getting higher visual fidelity every year we have reached the point where triple A games are just not viable to make anymore, dev time keeps getting longer

rockstar games release timeline

(funny how this chart didn't even age well)

I realised something recently

on one side you have teams of hundreds of developers
on the other side 5 dudes in their bedrooms
both making the same amount of sales on Steam

either making a successful indie game is the most OP thing you could ever do financially, or triple A games must be the worst possible way to do money, could be a little bit of both

Good games aren't relative to the time they were released, there is good in bad in every era, it's up to you to delve into what's out there and find the good you seek.

I remember this being a very hot topic way back when and one we never found a consensus or definitive answer for (I mean, how could we?).

So, let me ask you: when's your cutoff year for this sort of thing? When do you think gaming stopped evolving or simply didn't matter to you anymore? I personally stopped paying attention to the whole gaming world in 2004, so that's the year I'll pick.

What about you?
This is a complicated question to answer, cause I don't really have a cut-off year for when gaming stopped evolving... because it's still evolving, so I don't really know how to answer that. But what I can answer is the question of when I stopped caring, and that would be when Starfield released. I just realised that with how that game was, the gaming world is dying, and that there's just no point in getting your hopes up for something that is almost guaranteed to disappoint. One should just not buy new games, either play older ones or just wait for a sale or reviews or something. I just can't really bring myself to care anymore; it's also the fact of real life getting prioritised more than games. Real life is more important to me than games, so I don't really see myself playing games all that much like how I used to back in the day. So there's that, I guess.

That's actually very true. Indie games are definitely in the golden age, with how many Insta reels I have seen of indie devs talking about their game and what they plan on doing. It's nice to see, I think, because it shows you that the artistic drive of gaming hasn't died...yet, and that there will still be people who try to uphold the passion of creating an actually good game.

I dunno dude.
5 years ago I would have said they stopped after the NES and Super Nintendo.

Now, I'm hella into Totk, and the Switch is trying and potentially succeeding in becoming my favorite console.

I'll always prefer the graphics and sound of the NES, but I was a fool to think they stopped making good games nowadays just because of things like Wind Waker, Borderlands, or Fortnite. 😅

I won't defend Fortnite but Wind Waker and Borderlands (especially the first two) are good games. Not revolutionary like Ocarina nor Quake but still.

Wind Waker is half just going around digging in the ocean for Triforce pieces, and Borderlands is like a cheap, cartoonish, poor-man's Fallout.

"Half" is an hyperbole, the Triforce quest isn't even that long when you know where to go. Unless you don't bother reading the indications of where to go to get the charts you shouldn't spend more than an hour and a half (and I'm counting the teleport time). That's like saying that you spend half of Twilight Princess with the wolf or even just any kind of quest about getting items for the game.

This is the typical comment of someone who hasn't actually played Borderlands. I've played Fallout New Vegas (and a bit of the original two games) and it's not a cheap/poor man's Fallout whatsoever.

Also why using cartoonish as a negative thing? As if the art style was a demeaning factor.

Man, I came here to argue why good games are still being made, not debate personal taste. Don't you have other threads to argue in?

You're the one who made that statement in the first place.

We're in a public topic so expect having replies regarding said statement or else you'd keep it in private.

The intent of the topic is also for expressing opinions and debating about them.
