WonderSwan The WonderSwan was robbed

Have you tried it in retroarch? Or standalone? For me, retroarch’s provided core works well. They even have a setting somewhere in there to level the peaking from the swan audio
Yeah I use retroarch too. Honestly modern LCD's really showcase how gorgeous some of the wonderswan sprite work is.

There are a handful of games that have English patches, at this point I just might snag one and an R4 cart. They aren't too terribly expensive in decent condition and I do love playin stuff on OG hardware where possible. Hmmmm

Swan Crystal has a good screen (that is the one I use). I much prefer playing on an emulator though to be honest because unless you ips mod a wonderswan color the image wont be backlit and vibrant
and if you ips mod a wonderswan color the battery life drops drastically

Good to know! Honestly I've never been against using wormlights and what not. I frequently play games on my unmodded Gameboy Color so it shouldn't be a huge deal. I forgot the SwanCrystal existed tho! Will have to see if I can find good comparisons between the Color and the Crystal's screen before deciding.

If it been released internationally and it had third party games it would have been a threat to Nintendo’s handheld gaming dominance
no offense but that is straight up delusional, the year the og WS came out the original GB was still out, and still being extremely popular and also people where waiting for the next GB (the GBA) which came out in 2001 (i think) the same year the WSC came out, like there is no competition, and i really like the WS in general tho.

If you think about it for a few seconds you realize just how silly the idea of the WS doing well in the west was to begin with. Every competitor in the west failed both domestically and internationally when compared to the Gameboy. SNK, Sega, Atari etc, no one could hang! The fact that the WS couldn't compete in Japan with the Gameboy to the point that Bandai pulled the plug on it makes the idea of it doing super well in the west so silly. Even at the advent of handhelds, Japan was always adopting them at way higher rates than anywhere else in the world. If your system couldn't hang there, it wasn't gonna hang anywhere.

Bandai failed with Digimon, Digimon bro, given how popular it was is in japan you wonder how, and the WS had a shit ton of Digimon games.

Digimon never really failed domestically, the biggest issue that the franchise had in the west had everything to do with Fox constantly mishandling it. The card game was completely fucked up in the west, the anime and movie were borked up in various ways due to Fox etc etc. The closest you can come to blaming Bandai themselves is when it comes to the World games. While I love them, they're rough around the edges and nowhere near as kid-friendly as Pokemon was.

At least its back in a big way globally, rather than most Digimon media being trapped in Japan.

I'm lucky enough to have a Wonderswan Color myself (modded with a backlight). It needs some work - the batteries die pretty quickly so I'd really like a rechargeable battery pack, and my Digimon games have some strange issues that other games don't seem to have - it seems like it's a cartridge issue. That said, it works and I love it. One game I have that I've barely touched is Dark Eyes - Battle Gate, a strategy RPG I know very little about (and cannot even get past the tutorial due to not being able to read Japanese + an unexpectedly complex control scheme) but it looks really cool.

The original Digimon World was a masterpiece and a lot of kids loved the Digimon pooping on the floor lol.
The 2nd and 3rd game were more niche for sure. 2nd being a dungeon crawler and 3rd being a traditional JRPG with ambiguous direction on what to do next from what I remember.

World 4 was a blasé affair after much more competent hack and slashes existed at the time of its release.

You are right Fox's meddling definitely sabotaged the glory of the anime but the anime was so good that it endured regardless lol.

As much as the sub is preferable I do like the Digivolution phrase of the anime dub.

Back to wonderswan...

I finally mustered up the courage to IPS mod a color.

I was terrified that I damaged the IPS because I initially put it in upside down and had to remove and put it back in.

I might have slightly damaged it and I need to reopen it anyways to put the switch on the side (forgot) and remove the electrical tape sticking out of one of the buttons. If my solder joints were shown I would be a pariah in the tech community as well. I am just thrilled it works.

It has Judgement Silversword, and that game alone made me love this thing to warrant an emulator. Luckily the console itself is quite cheap in my country, around the same price as Game Boy, though I'm unsure if I'll ever get this thing if I use my DSi XL to emulate those games

Judgement Silversword is ludicrously expensive but luckily emulation exists like you said. I mean Klonoa is expensive and judgement silversword and dicing knight eclipse it in price. In emulation can you switch it vertically or is it automatically done on a game basis? Just curious.

On DSi I use emulator that lets me flip the screen and play vertically like on the real console. Not as convenient due to button placement, but it kinda works. You can also flip the screen horisontally and such.
Oh, and I used NitroSwan

I've never held one in my hands but from the looks of it, I feel like I would hate the buttons/ergonomics. Anyone who has actually played one for an extended period disagree?

wouldve bought it in a heartbeat. its so pretty, and with graphics similar to the gba, the first console i ever owned, i would love to have been able to play its exclusives

It had some pretty good Digimon games if you like Digimon.
not usually but id love to try it out if only to see what they had cookin on the cute little thing. also looking forward to playin some of the translations that exist and those to come
