The (Un)Welcomed Sequel (Not) Everyone Wanted

AAF79B61-CF9E-4BC0-8330-FC00C6644284.jpeg

The 3rd Birthday is a third person shooter, action rpg that serves as the third entry in the Parasite Eve series. Some say it’s a sequel to some a spin-off and even a reboot but one thing is for sure it tore its fandom apart.

But before we proceed please be advised that this retrospective may contain some spoilers and most definitely some cringe and whacked out theory or two from a certain fan(me) so please bear that in mind as you go on.

Now that we have that one out of the way here we go…….

This game is initially perceived as an episodic game for mobile phones. Square Enix wanted to capitalize on the success they had with their titles such as Final Fantasy 7 and Front Mission which had mobile game release treatments prior that. The development for the game was shelved for a year or two until Tetsuya Nomura pushed it as a console title be it the PSP. The decision was made because of the developer’s aim for “realism” something that the PSP’s could deliver and something mobile phones couldn’t back then. Another thing worth mentioning is that Square Enix hired Hexa Drive a Japanese indie game dev studio to co-develop the game. Hexa Drive is consists of former Capcom employees most notable for their work on the sci-fi shooter Lost Planet. The game received mixed reviews the negative ones pointing out the confusing story and the said approach to realism.

The game features an ots(over the shoulder) and cover shooting mechanics with a lock on system that enables you to move around while shooting your firearm. Gone are the Parasite Abilities of the first two games and it was replaced by the Overdive and Liberation. Overdive is the ability to transfer you consciousness to an NPC having the ability to control them which makes it feel like more of a squad shooter, not only that you can Overdive to a nearby NPC to gain advantage of the terrain but also serves as a quick escape especially if your HP is low allowing you to control someone with full health. Another thing worth mentioning is the Overdive Kill a button prompt during combat that allows you to Overdive to an enemy and make them explode. Liberation on the other hand functions as a special skill which makes you move faster and inflict more damage at certain span of time.

Having rpg elements this game has some quite of customization to it. You have access to wide variety of guns such as pistols, rifles(assault/sniper) shotguns and some special weapons like Lightning Farron’s Gunblade. Parasite Ability is replaced by Over Energy which utilizes an EN chip which was dropped by certain enemies that you will acquire and equip to have access to some buffs like HP regeneration, making your Liberation meter fills faster and so on.

Once again you played as Aya Brea but this time she is totally nerfed, suffering from amnesia stripped out of her powers confused and totally vulnerable. Having the power to transfer her consciousness to another person she uses a device called Overdive System to go back in time to confront the new threat called the Twisted. The game’s narrative is told through cutscenes and in game dialogue. The game is split into chapters and divided in several segments. For an rpg this is quite short about less than 10 hours per playthrough. Though there are a lot of items that you won’t be able to unlock on a single playthrough and multiple replays is advised if you want to unlock every weapon, protective gear and that “shower scene”. You can also unlock some in game cheats such as infinite ammo, faster HP regeneration and so much more.

I can’t tell you more about the game with giving some more further spoilers. But being the lazy person that I am there’s no way in heck that I’m gonna waste my energy to elaborate more of the plot. Rather let me tell you about something else. This game somewhat serves as both a farewell and reintroduction for Aya as a character. She is now portrayed as someone who can feel fear and lost the convictions she showed on the previous games. That being the part of the developer’s vision of realism. They don’t want to show Aya as somewhat like an action hero but instead someone who gets scared wounded and confused being unsure of a lot of things including her own self. That same “realism” became the subject of a number of controversies.

There’s a third “form” of this somewhat wardrobe damage that leaves nothing to the imagination which I can’t show you!

A game that should’ve been the one to reinvigorate a series that laid dormant for ten years became a game that nobody wanted. Despite the developers’ attempt to breathe new life into the series it became something most of fans couldn’t fully understand. The Parasite Eve series is a product of what we called the Golden Age. A series synonymous of being not afraid to try something new and this game is no exception. Square Enix tried something new but couldn’t get the result they hoped for. Was it doomed by the timing? Ten years is a very long time for a sequel and it didn’t help that the second entry concluded the story with its ending. Still some fans including me see this one as a flawed masterpiece.

Right now I know what you’re thinking. I’ve been cringe yapping and made that microscopic spoiler but where’s that theory.

Okay here it is……….
Have you ever wondered why the two games was never ported to another system after the 2000s? Though most of the PS1 titles got a sequel on PS2 and some are even ported to iOS and Android. And why did they ditch the Parasite Eve title?
My theory has something to do with the title itself. Then Squaresoft only paid the license for the IP including some of its elements and said license expires in a few years if the licensee failed to renew it. If you watched d the movie which is a faithful adaptation of the novel you’ll see that aside from the mitochondria mutation there’s really nothing more that connects it to the game. The in game universe and character rights belongs to Square Enix but since the license expired it really troublesome for them to release without going in some legal shenanigans. And that’s why they ditched the title, changed a lot of things in the lore and hope to breakaway from Parasite Eve and establish a new continuity.

See I told it was a pretty whacked up theory.

Thank you very much for spending time on this cringe trip of mine.

This is Stingy Perry signing off.

I played all three and I kinda like all of them but I believe both PE 2 and 3rd Birthday really felt detached from the first one.
Someday i'll try these two and see what i think about them. I've played a lot of Kingdom Hearts and also finished Crisis Core, so as long as the game is fun, then i think i can handle another convoluted plot :loldog

The 3rd Birthday is the shortest of of the 3 games but if you wanna unlock everything you really have to play it multiple times and all the things you already unlocked gets carried over to you next playthrough

Neat, just like resident evil games ::thinking

I've played it once and it doesn't look bad to be considered the 3rd installment of the Parasite Eve saga because of its playable perspective that is completely different from the previous 2 installments of the saga and as well as its game system that is more different in itself because it's like a kind of 3rd person shooter but with RPG elements, Graphically it is quite good for a game of the year 2011 and today it has aged like wine being a young game, the music is good and It is compliant at least but the story is completely different from the previous installments and also that it is not its strong point for the game and by the way your Retrospective is very good Perry. 👍🏻👍🏻

Well I did enjoy this game I really like the switch between person

For the peace of mind I consider thr 3rd birthday alternative timeline in PE1 and PE2.

Me too considering how I felt the 3 games are detached from one another.

While I still don't like this one. My disdain has somewhat subsided over the years moment I knew she wasn't the Aya we knew. Then it kinda made sense. But still a letdown. Nice review Perry! ::coolstafy

I always saw this game as their answer to resident evil 4. RE 4 is a cheesy b-movie horror masterpiece. They did a gritty remake that lost the cheese but is just as good as the original if not better, honestly RE 4 OG and it's remake are both perfect action games, they did it twice, it's crazy. I wish pararsite evil actaully became its rival that kept going but the demand to make them pure action games was needed as they started selling extremely high numbers after that.

The cause of it being named the third birthday and the massive tone and story change was, as far as I can recall, they lost the license to parasite eve, so they had to change it enough to still release the game, hence not parasite eve 3. This would explain most odd changes that were made or even why such odd changes likely had to be made. It goes without saying that the tone in most square enix games around this time was basically kingdom hearts, even crisis core felt like a kingdom hearts game. I loved the first PE, got to play it back when it released. Whilst the sequels are good, the second and third tried too hard to ape whatever capcom was doing at the time. The first is so unique in comparison, clearly they were chasing those western RE sales numbers. What really would have helped was releasing the game in Europe, Square were dumb back then and didn't release many of their games in Europe.

As for all the media essentially having a hate campaign against the game, the advertising of Aya for the third birthday was in line with the previous games, disc 2 on the pal release had Aya wearing a jacket with nothing under it.

The third birthday really wasn't far removed from it's prequels, not any more than RE4 was to the prior games in the series. It was released at a time that demonised attractive female characters and had a horrible control scheme making the game an absolute chore, there was too many things going against it, which is a shame as the gameplay is actually great. I'd suggest anyone that abandoned the game before, to try it again with a twin stick controller on an emulator or play it on the vita. It's actually great outside of the typical Square enix story telling at the time. They really should've put the slutty santa outfit into the third game, tie it even more into the second game in a way. There's the odd bit if artwork where she literally just looks like Clouds sister, this always makes me laugh. Lightning is also clearly based on OG Aya as a main staff member from parasite eve series worked on the FF13 series.

This “trilogy” holds a special place in my heart. The 3rd Birthday for me is an rpg disguised as a third person shooter.

Heck there’s no rpg that lets you pilot an attack helicopter and drive a tank while destroying monsters straight out of a hellish horror story.
The first game actually had a similar thing going on with it's battle system, like an overworld version of a turn based battle, how the game paused to allow for targeting an attacking and such, it's actually the second game that is the outlier, that had the most generic gameplay mechanics of the three by essentially being a pure RE clone for the most part in terms of gameplay.

I too love parasite eve and will defend the third birthday with my life, the undubbed one at least.

I remembered that Hironobu Sakaguchi tasked other character designers to do Aya but none of the samples given to him got approved. Sakaguchi asked Nomura if he could design a a girl with long blonde hair. Coincidentally Nomura had some early designs of Aya that he was saving for another game and when Sakaguchi sees it he said that they’ll go with that design.

I am in the minority here, but I do really like this game, the story is garbage and one of the worst plot in gaming but the gameplay, music and graphics are so good that I can forgive that, this is a very fun game to play and shoot wierd alien looking things, bad plot be dammed.

Heh, I barely consider PE2 a sequel, make of that what you will. Great article though!
If I am not mistaken PE2 was initially an spin-off but they decided to make a sequel to PE1

I remembered that they initially wanted to put Kyle as the main character in PE 2 until they decided to put Aya back in.

There is no doubt that the music in 3rd Birthday are banger because some of the tracks were remixes of music from the first 2 games which are total gems already.

I kind of love this game because it introduced me to the PS1 Parasite Eve titles. The first game is incredible and still holds up really well. The second and The 3rd Birthday drifted too far from what made the original special, but if I had to pick one, Parasite Eve II really does feel like a “we have Resident Evil at home” situation. I still enjoy The 3rd Birthday more than the second game.

I’d happily buy all of them today, but like you said, that may not be possible anytime soon. It’s a shame, because these games deserve to be available again.

I'm still stuck at "refreshing vulnerability". I can't. I'm going to play this someday, but note to self, do not read the descriptions. Yikes.

To edit a little, I understand that judging by the "official art" for PE that the author is into the whole "horror is not cleft from sexuality" camp, but it's always been something I've never really been able to wrap my head around, so, of course, I guess I'm not the target audience.

At the same time it's not like I'm not sitting over here going "well, in Japan, the target for this unfortunately is going to be Brotakus, so of course the art is going to reflect the demographic they want to sell to". That sorta thought process is still hecka prevalent the world over I think, so...rip.

Yeah, never heard of it. But it’s my favorite game now

I still didn't had the courage to play this game. Aya Brea is one of my favourite female protagonists in video games, and the way they portrait her in this game pisses me off.

Look how they massacred my girl

Aya in this game is not actually Aya herself but...

As wise man once said: "Why you do this to me, Nomura?"

I heard they (square enix) lost the licensed of the original source. that's why they can't use the name "Parasite Eve" and some story element (maybe). So, they had to come up with something. And "the 3rd birthday" is born.

Yeah, i've heard they had the license for a good amount of time, but didn't do anything with it until the license expired. So it's mainly Square's fault
