So... Is there anyone brave enough among us that consumed this literature to give us an opinion?
Are they still worthwhile today?
Are they just products of the time when Resident Evil was expanding?

I only read the first one and felt comfortable with someone clearly defining the characters' routes in Spencer Mansion (something Mikami refused to do even in REmake).

I loved (yes, LOVED) her take on Resident Evil Zero — I thought she had done a great job handling both Billy and Rebecca, who really needed strong characterization.

I haven't read anything else by her, but that was a promising first lead.

My friend (who I pushed into reading along with me) hated it, however.

I've got a few of the novels but I'm still yet to read them. They're the later editions with the more bland covers though (basically just the renders of the characters from the RE0 and REMake era).

I know. The books were only released in my country with those covers (I'm glad it wasn't a regional decision) 🤭

Does the Umbrella executive filler also appear in the RE∅ book?

I've read both The Umbrella Conspiracy and Nemesis and enjoyed both quite a bit. I put off reading The Umbrella Conspiracy for quite a while, out of concern that they'd butcher the source material. And, whilst the book doesn't follow the narrative of the first game to the letter, what it adds I still found very engaging, and when it does touch on moments from the game (like T-Virus infected dogs rushing the desperate S.T.A.R.S team in the outdoor sections of the mansion grounds) the writing was fun and the pacing was riveting.

My fave part of either book was in Nemesis, when it described Jill Valentine's attempt to push through the streets of Racoon City, firing her dwindling Beretta rounds into the shambling corpses slowly surrounding her. Really great stuff.

Did Jill from book also seem indifferent to the citizens of Raccoon?

From what I've researched, this character only exists so author can create her spin-offs without interfering with the canon.

That's a really good question, and honestly? I can't remember. I think I'd remember if she was super callous. She may have had a moment of internal monologue where she wrestles with what good she can do for others, and been bitter about it, but I'm really not sure. It's been at least 15 years since I last read it. ::sailor-embarrassed

I only noticed this indifference recently when I read the game's text more carefully... and I was shocked ("You didn't listen to me, so die in ignorance, fools").

Ok yeah, that's pretty militant. xD

Tbf though, by this point, she's in a much different place at the beginning of RE3 than she was at the start of RE1. The young, idealist person than she was before the S.T.A.R.S were decimated and the remaining members splintered is long gone. She's trying to escape a city moments away from nuclear holocaust, and she's in survival mode - I can accept the character change. Do you remember who she said that too? Or the context of the scene?

One of her monologues at the beginning of game.

"It all began as an ordinary day in September... an ordinary day in Raccoon City, a city controlled by Umbrella. No one dared to oppose them, and that lack of strength would ultimately lead to their destruction. I suppose they have to suffer the consequences of their actions, but there would be no forgiveness. If only they have had the courage to fight! It's true that once the wheels of justice begin to turn, nothing can stop them... nothing. It was Raccoon City's last chance... and MY last chance. My last escape..."
