Hi folks, I wanted to just post a quick info dump on what to actually expect regarding the ROG Xbox Ally based on everything I've read and watched up to this point and I'll wrap it up with my thoughts and why I am going to be a day 1 buy.

- What is an ROG Ally?
An ROG Ally is a handheld laptop. It runs on windows primarily, with more recent efforts from groups like Universal Blue (Bazzite) to run like a Steam Deck
- What's the advantage to having an ROG Ally over a Steam Deck?
Love or hate windows, it fully comes down to compatibility. While the heroic launcher and lutris for linux is an amazing tool to have, the biggest caveat is anti-cheat. More and more games are requiring a kernal level anti-cheat system like Battlefield 6, Fortnite, and any RIOT game. These do not run on the Steam Deck whatsoever, I've tried personally with Skate., 2XKO, Fortnite, and Battlefield 6's Beta.
- Could it replace my Switch 2?
Really depends on what you have your Switch 2 for, if you use your Switch 2 mainly for 3rd Party titles that are available elsewhere then I'd say yes. If you're like me who only looks at the Switch as a 1st party only system, no it will not.
- Why is this new ROG Ally called the ROG Xbox Ally?
Because while this is essentially the ROG Ally 2, Xbox partnered with Asus to change the ergonomics of the controller side of the system. Xbox is also being put in charge of redoing the portable Windows experience with the Xbox "Full Screen Experience." It's designed the same way Steam OS is where Steam OS is a front plate for KDE Plasma, the desktop environment for the linux build.
- What if I don't have a library on PC?
Starting from scratch on PC is a lot easier than I think people make it out to be. Some free to play games I would recommend would be Zenless Zone Zero, Warframe, Marvel Rivals, and Hearthstone, I would also highly recommend linking your Xbox account if you have one to the system so you can access any possible "Play Anywhere titles" you may already own. This is where Xbox Game Pass would shine at it's brightest to aid with the transition to PC gaming.
- What is the horsepower under the system going to be like?
If I had to take a guess I would ballpark PS4 Pro level performance. The ROG Xbox Ally systems are running on an AMD APU (Basically a single chip housing the graphics and cpu brain power) so you'll have access to things like FSR which is a great tool to have that will extend the life of your handheld system. People have touted that Doom the Dark Ages runs at a butter smooth 60fps on the system but I unfortunately don't know what settings there were. Luckily we do have a hands on video available from Deck Wizard showcasing it here:
- What's the Price?
The Base Model has been confirmed at $600 and the X model at $900
- That's extremely expensive!
That's the main cost of PC gaming, You spend more on the hardware than you do the actual games, luckily the hardware if utilized right can last you nearly double the length of a regular console. The other kicker is once you buy a game on Steam or GOG or whatever storefront, as long as it works on the OS that you're using, you can still play it. No need to have to rebuy a game you already own on a previous system. Everyone totes steam as this amazing storefront for having steam sales which, are still good to a point don't get me wrong, but you're more buying for longevity.
- Why not just get a Steam Deck or the previous ROG Ally in comparison?
The 256GB LCD Steam Deck is $400 and would require you to go and buy a microSD card to really download anything heavy. You are also going to deal with the Compatibility issues stated before. If you're wanting something that plays more lighter games like say Cuphead and other titles, it's a totally valid option. Add the fact that you can't use game pass on the Steam Deck without having to heavily tinker with it to get a Windows install and the like.
- Can it dock to a TV?
It can! You don't need a proprietary dock either, just any thunderbolt dock that supports power passthrough and an HDMI out and you're golden, you can find them normally for $20-$30 on Amazon.

What people don't realize is this. You are moving out of a console ecosystem and transitioning to a PC ecosystem regardless of how much PR wants to spin it with the "This is an Xbox" slogan. Xbox is moving forward from being a console exclusive wheelhouse into a ecosystem wheelhouse where they are trying to sell the UI and the brand because customers that are buying from Xbox are demanding for more PC-centric things, Cross-play, Keyboard and Mouse support, etc. People are also using this to spin a narrative of "Well this isn't going to replace my Switch 2" to which, yeah, no shit you just bought that system less than half a year ago, no one in their right mind would look at something they spend hundreds on and go "yeah I'm ready to dump this thing" within 6 months unless it was that bad for them.

On my end, I've been a Steam Deck owner since wave one of the 512GB Etched LCD Screen model I then upgraded to the OLED Model 1TB. For years I've been hoping for a proper upgrade because more often than not most handheld PCs would trade blows with the Steam Deck offering a small variance of performance between titles. The ROG Xbox Ally is the first system that feels like a proper upgrade to what I already have. I've been on PC Gaming since 2010 so my library is well built with games I actively play along with a healthy backlog to go through. For me I will be buying the ROG Xbox Ally X for the Extra Ram and beefier battery. Couple all this with how Nintendo has been lately and I am pulling out of buying any of their products after this year. Metroid Prime 4 is my last game I will be buying personally.

Don't let buzzwords and ragebait videos cloud judgement because that's how you end up with purchases that you will suffer buyers remorse over. Good Luck, hope this helps!

You sound like you're sold on it, but I'd still hold off and let early adopters be the guinea pigs, just in case there's some hardware issue they don't catch going out the door?
I am sold on it because I'm already in the ecosystem as is with the Steam deck, but I know there's a lot of misinformation being tossed around, not even malicious most times so I want to sort of be someone to be allowed to ask questions to.

I usually don't fault hardware failures within the 1-2 months of launch if it's not crazy widespread and chalk it up to factory faults that slipped through.

I personally don't care about the big massive AAA games with high component requirements, so If I just want a portable PC, would the Steam Deck be perfect for many years?

If you play Indie games absolutely, There is however the caveat of some AA games are a coin flip if they play nice on the Steam Deck. Like Space Marine 2 is a prime example of a game that I can't really play on Steam Deck to my liking. Or if I wanted to play Street Fighter 6 I have to really crank the settings down and adjust it properly. I would not recommend Monster Hunter Wilds, but World and Rise play well.

And here I was told you can't and that it didn't have an HDMI out. Now that I hear this, I'm definitely getting this to replace my aging Steam Deck. I love the Deck, but it's showing it's age and newer JRPG (SMT5, Metaphor) run poorly on it. At least poorly according to my standards. I want to grab an Ally and hook it up to my TV to use as a set top box as sorts. Access my Steam games (JRPGs) on my TV without having to resituate my laptop to fill that role.

$900 isn't that bad. A decent gaming laptop (An oxymoron, I know) costs 2K, a good gaming PC about 3K, and a PS5 Pro will set you back 700, so this isn't too bad IMHO.

Yeah as long as the Thunderbolt Dock has an HDMI port, you can hook it up that way to a TV. Was at Combo Breaker this year and someone was using their ROG Ally X to play friendlies in Street Fighter 6 on the monitor

That Windows XBox Experience will come to other PC handhels next year, the preview leak is out already.
That Best Windows handheld is MSI Claw 8ai nowadays, even the cheapest Claw Ultra5/7 is a gaming beast if you are windows tweakers, its not just plug and play as Switch.
I game on my Msi Claw U5 135H (new $350) as my laptop replacement, can play everything all pc/retro emulations/ Switch emu very good playable and enjoyable.
But you only have 1-2 game batterylife, no problwm for me as I play pluggedin laying on bed

Pre-Orders went live today, just got my Xbox Ally X. It was $700 for Base, $1k for the X model. A shock for a lot of people but exactly the ballpark I expected.

I'm just happy that I'm not much of a handheld person. The only reason I used to buy handhelds was because they had their own exclusive games. That's not a thing anymore. The Switch 2 is the only one that could still be considered that, however I play mine almost exclusively docked.

The same XBOX Experience UI will come to all Windows 11 PC handhelds.
You only buy this if you like the XBOX branding Grips.

I responded to this exact thread saying that "I think the push for SteamOS is getting Windows to finally make a controller friendly Windows OS option made for consoles. If MS embraced Steam as a platform and integrated Gamepass with the platform alongside releasing their games day 1 on steam like they have been, they have the potential to grow past any console war." We're getting there slowly but surely.

I don't personally have any investment here since I have zero interest in a handheld from anyone, I just remembered that old thread.

Xbox and PC have been my main way to play games for 20+ years. I have thousands of digital games on my Xbox and Steam accounts.

This thing seemingly doesn't provide the digital back compat OG Xbox and 360 games, it serves no purpose as "An Xbox" and the more they obfuscate it with their ridiculous PR, the less I care to buy this crap. Windows Xbox PC games have always been segregated from console versions, many have had no achievements, or the build they sell of a specific game could be behind or totally incompatible with Steam releases.

Windows 10 and 11 is nothing but poison now. No quality assurance done before live updates that break the user experience. It constantly indexes everything on the file system and sends it off to Redmond so they can better train their AI, and more accurately inject targeted Bing ads into your life.

This whole thing is a step in the right direction for Xbox, but only if Microsoft makes Windows actually worth the massive heap of bullshit they force you to eat for being a customer. Only if they pull off a miracle and deliver all their games over to Windows users and unify the ecosystem. They will live or die by the care they put into this roll out. They have been usually awful at messaging and delivering for more than a decade.

That being said, I have been a Steam Deck user since a month after it launched, and that thing is the best piece of hardware I have bought in decades. No buyer's remorse. It forced me to use my backlog. I will also get Switch 2 sooner or later for a handful of games that never made their way to PC.

Playstation has a snowball's chance in hell at winning me over after Vita, and as long as Xbox keeps promising and never delivering, they are heading in that direction.

I've really wanted to pick up a handheld PC, maybe this will be the thing to finally push me over the edge since it seems to have really high value for the price. Definitely gonna keep my eye on these things.

Gonna keep an eye on this.

The device is expensive too expensive I would say but who knows maybe it will be good. You can never know.

1k dollars for a integrated graphics card? and windows? no thanks

Well on first day impressions I will say it's definitely an 8/10 device. Hardware wise it's exactly what I had both expected and wanted. The Form Factor is comfortable. The face buttons are arguably better than the Steam Deck's. The X performs nearly double the FPS than the Steam Deck in the games I've so far tested and load times are about 5 seconds faster. The system comes pre-installed with Steam and there's a tab that has all the other launchers they have confirmed work with the Fullscreen Experience App. You can still download launchers like the EA App through the website.

Kernal Level Anti-Cheat works on the system so I'm able to play 2XKO, Skate & Fortnite.

The growing pains I've immediately found are actually a shared problem between steam and the handheld both being problem children. If you click the Xbox App it pulls up the Ally's Overlay, however if you're on Steam, you will launch Big Picture Mode. The only way to circumvent this is by disabling the home button launching Steam BPM. Credit: tintingaroo on Steam . If you are in Steam BPM you still have the issue with the Xbox Home button pulling up the overlay and the Steam home menu at the same time and closing at the same time.

The AI Z2 Extreme is the CPU and the GPU is an 890M Integrated core. Comparatively to the Steam Deck this is a genuinely good upgrade at 720P gaming, couple that with a screen with good pixel density and you'll get a solid portable experience. Now the question is if you want a handheld or a laptop for around that price for portable PC gaming.

Here are some screen grabs I got today:

Killer Instinct on Steam Deck

Killer Instinct on ROG Xbox Ally X (Display settings captured the resolution when the game was windows after waking up from sleep mode)

Wreckfest 2 on both systems side by side: (Note: Wreckfest 2 has a texture loading problem on linux, that is not exclusive to steam deck)

Granblue Fantasy: Relink on both systems side by side:

It is interesting no question but I would have preferred that Microsoft had built its own handheld console and not from Asus. And yes the prices are not so convincing the cheapest version is not good you are forced to buy an expensive one if you want good performance.

It looks cool but having been burned by Windows-based handhelds recently I'm more tempted to stick with the tried-and-tested Steam Deck over the Xbox Ally.

I do not trust MS to handle their end of things at all, and while I'm ready and hoping to be proven wrong, I see no reason to invest in one until I can see proof that they're worth owning.

These devices aren't going anywhere unless they're a pile of huge dogshit. Do not let them use FOMO to trick you into buying something before you know that you want or need it.
