The paradigm shift in RPGs

Not to confuse with another acronym that have a completely different meaning.

Jokes aside I found it to be a more dynamic turn based system.
LMAO I was about to say.
Have to agree. ATB is good but CTB just had more oomph to it. The fact it was the final mainline turn based game (not counting X2) also gives it more mystique. Really love FFX

I'm a turn based rpg lover.
But i love the Growlanser 4 type of battle system, for example.

To me actions Rpg are slightly worse that turn based, i may be a bit nostalgic about this.

It always felt to me like Square wanted FF to move on from turn based gameplay since 12. Then came 13 with the ATB Queue Paradigm Shifting craziness and eventual we arrived at 15 and then 16/7R. If you want, you can blame Tetsuya Nomura.

I know someone here who like Tetsuya :D

ATB shows its limits when you're alone.

Maybe we can get more variants.

see i saw atb, i read the comment your talking about, yet i read that as anti lock braking system

I am happy that we still get some big turn based RPGs, like Yakuza 7 & Infinite Wealth and (admittedly in a slightly different form) Baldur's Gate 3,
The success of Baldur's Gate 3 proves that the mainstream is still down for turn based games.

That level of freedom looks like the way to go. Maybe someone will recreate a FF campaign with the recent world building mods.

Yes, notice how there is only one?

baldur's gate 3 really wasn't mainstream, it just hit every pc gamer, which made it reach mainstream numbers, if that makes sense. plus most of the numbers came AFTER the game awards lol. there's a reason there was a massive outcry amongst the mainstream when it won goty. (and i gotta admit as someone who LIKES bg3 it is NOT that special it's good but didnt "redefine the industry" like everyone was saying its just a quality crpg). i still think armored core 6 deserved goty, or even mario wonder.

And how exactly does armored core or the 100th mario redefine the industry?

Bro...tell me you did not just write that,

Please look at this and tell me how PC gaming isn't mainstream.

I think one of the current paradigm shifts is away from Squenix. They don't have their western arm to blame for their losses, and the last financial reports show that. when FF7 Remake 2 can sell buckets and buckets and they are still not satified...
They are activly killing Platnum with GaaS, they are dumping their SIngle A games so no one knows they released, and they keep doing Web3 nonsense.

Is the only reason they are still afloat FF14? if FF7R2 and FF1 "Failed to meet expectations" the only play they have left is what ever they are doing to Kingdom Hearts, or get bought.

the Rest of the Console RPG ecosystem seems to be leaving them and the more they step into Character Action the harder it will be.

That's some pretty sharp insight. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Reading everyone's comments made me realize that things are, perhaps, not as dire as I assumed for turn based RPGs after all.

Sorry, I got a bit worked up. I use to be a fan of Square's work, and not just FF. Einhander Parasite Eve, Front Mission, Star Ocean and so on. I have a real disdain for their current leadership doing dumb things. Other COnsole RPG makers are picking up the Slack. Sega alone is probably the new home for Japanese Turn base RPG, and the Western games play fine on consoles, outside of BG3 on the little Xbox series.

I don't know how to feel aobut my salt coated facts being taken this face value. ┬─┬ノ( º _ ºノ)

I think you misunderstood. I was praising your perception and frankness. None of what you said is untrue, so there's nothing to feel uncertain about.

I understand you feeling this way. Companies repeatedly tell us they know what we want, as fans, and almost always that is untrue; they don't know, and if they do know, then they almost always fail to care (they are a business first, after all, and everything begins and ends with the bottom line).

Seeing an intellectual property you care about mishandled or forgotten can easily lead to frustration, believe me, I know, and generally, at the forefront of these frustrations for me is Square Enix (Konami isn't far behind). For one, I always thought the merger was a mistake - creativity and style were all diluted, and you don't see that Enix touch anymore, it's all Square, let's face it.

If you look closely at these large game studio mergers, one half of the coin always prevails, and dictates the output of the now cojoined entity from that point forward. Koei-Tecmo is a merger, but let's face it, there's a lot of Koei and very little Tecmo in there.

The stock market based mentality of the suits is what is killing the game industry. Small studios aim to make quality games, they become successful and get bought out by bigger companies or go public. As soon as that happens they go to shit. It happens almost with 100% hit rate. There's something wrong with the system if these are the results of being successful.
