The Original PC 88 Version of YS 1 Has now been translated!

Wow, this is one you'd really have thought was out there a long time ago. Good find.

Surprised it took so long considering how legendary game is

I figure Ys still being somewhat niche even after its growth over the years coupled with Ys 1 having many other translated versions made it fairly low priority for most people. PC 88 is a growing platform though with more and more eyes on it!

according to the description on the romhacking site he finished it 6 years ago but just never released it... o.O

I've already finished the game once (the EGG Console Ys I PC-88 port) on the Switch, I was bummed that they didn't just translate the menus at least but I'm glad that there's finally one.

Now the question would be: how do I properly emulate that hardware?

I've found Ys I PC-88 online with disk A and disk B but I cannot patch them...

The page says
DAT Information
Full translation of the original version of Ys 1. Patch onto the following disks:
  • Ys (Disk A).d88 (b838e8767516ffaa5b469bb9e319f5a5)
  • Ys (Disk B).d88 (f73ecb4451453a45adb14f99c82decf3)
  • Ys (User disk).d88 (6dc0de1413da89f195b7362b5a750a7c)
You may not need to do the user disk, actually... But a patch is included just because.

Or alternatively (and better tested):
  • ys1_b.d88 (04354347da3c872fb52cd0cad6aad35e) (this is a combo disk image including all the disks together. Most of the development was based on this file)
The patcher says invalid checksum despite the file being called "Ys (1987)(Nihon Falcom)(Disk 1 of 2)(Disk A).d88" and "Ys (1987)(Nihon Falcom)(Disk 2 of 2)(Disk B).d88".

I also cannot find the combo disk image called "ys1_b.d88" either.

I've looked all over and can't find ys1_b.d88 either. I tried to manually create the file by merging them into one .d88 file using a floppy disk image tool but couldn't find a tool that could properly do that. The disk images that the patch files use are the ones found in the file Ys [FD].7z on this page at the bottom, not the ones from the TOSEC romset that you're using. I was able to patch them without error but when I try to play them using Neko Project 21/W all I get is a black screen and nothing ever happens. Same thing happens with the Neko Project versions in RetroArch. Does anybody know how to get this game working? Or if someone can locate a pre-patched version using the ys1_b.d88 file

Thank you!

I know that RTG/the OG site aren't using old PC games outside of Windows but it's a bit annoying how harder it is to find a decent list of games when it's not on consoles...

That´s Awesome but I will tell any one that wanna get in to the series either play the PC-engine or Ys book I and II chronicles on steam or psp or even the DS version.

Best one I think is the PC-engine version or turbo graphics 16 as it´s also known as.

Only reason to play the PC-88 is just to play the very very first version of the game or if you wanna play all the versions then you also have the Sharp x6800 version.

What I do wish for every day is fan translation of Ys I and I and III and IV for the PS2 Would be neat to play does versions.

AS a huge fan of the early YS games I try to play every versions I can.

The PS2 versions of Ys IV and V are the ones I'd love to see translated more than any other one. I'd like to be able to play the remake version of V since the only one available in English is the SNES one

If you want to play more PC-98 games there's a whole archive of translated and partially translated games on archive.org with over 100 games. I think there's also some PC-8801 games on there too but they're not labeled which is which. Hopefully they'll add this Ys 1 translation in a few days or so. You can find that archive.org entry here There's a similar collection for MSX and MSX 2 (the MSX versions of Ys 1 to 3 are on there) here For a good easy to understand guide on how to play PC-98/88 games on Windows (and Linux if you use Wine or something similar I suppose) check this out.

Edit: ok I found out that Neko Project technically can play PC-8801 games but it's mainly just for PC-98 and a lot of PC-8801 games will only work with a dedicated emulator for it like the emulator M88. So here's the best version of M88 I could find along with the required bios and the pre-patched Ys 1 disks. It also includes gif picture translations of the options into English since the emu is in Japanese only. (view them using the html file) This will work fine straight out of the box but you can tweak with the options how you like. The game uses the numpad to move around and a few other keys for stuff. You can download all that here in this zip It's a catbox.moe link so it'll be around forever

Hello everyone. Glad you're enjoying the translation.

The description has been updated to include the location of the ys1_b.d88 file. It's in the PC8801 ソフト 1840本セット set. I did all of the testing on this, so it's the one I recommend using.

The split disks are fairly untested (though if someone can finish the game on those, please tell me as it would be good peace of mind). I created the patch by splitting ys_1b.d88 and patching against the files listed.

I recommend M88 to play the game. That said, it should work on retroarch as well. I seem to recall that I playtested it successfully there on my iPhone of all things. There were RetroAchievements for the original, but as far as I know they have not been updated for the English translation at this point.

If you find any bugs, let me know. I finished this more than half a decade ago (initially I wanted to release all of the Ys 1-3 PC88 translations simultaneously on the 35th anniversary), so it's been awhile, but I'm still in touch with my hacker so we could in theory fix things up.

We still want to do Ys 2-3 as well. The translations are done, including the manual elements (maybe I should add those to the wiki like I did the Ys 1 backstory years ago), but there's a few major bugs holding up release (and have been for like 3-4 years now).

Also happy to answer any questions.

Can this be played using the latest revision of Neko Project 21/w? (https://simk98.github.io/np21w/index.html) I dunno if it's the settings I have it on or if the emulator just won't load it. It just forever stays on a black screen. I managed to find the ys1_b.d88 file from finding an archive.org page for the romset you mentioned, but the zip name you gave that includes the file was renamed and jumbled up in the archive so I had to just use WinRAR to extract them all to find it. I dunno which zip contained the file. Also I changed the files in my catbox link to use the single file version instead of the split disks one

Funny you say how catbox will be around forever but the link is not working anymore lol
Can you make another link?

The link is still working. Your network is just blocking it. Go to croxyproxy.com and enter the file url into the url bar on there and you'll be able to download it. Or use a VPN like Proton VPN or something

That's weird, Catbox was working fine a few weeks ago but I got it anyway through VPN. Thanks.

Sorry, I wish I could tell you whether Neko Project 21/w works. I never tested it. I played it on Retroarch and M88 exclusively.

As for the jumbled up filenames in the archive - the issue is in the codepage. Set it to SHIFT_JIS (or set your Windows to Japanese) and you should be able to see the filenames just fine.

You can also try something with 7-zip like

& 'C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7zG.exe' x -mcp=932 -o"pc8801-games" -- ".\(ゲーム エミュ PC88) PC8801 ソフト1840本セット.zip"

Or something like that anyway. It might work to get the right filenames out even without setting your computer to Japanese?
