Alright, ladies and germs! It's that time again! Time to gather together the illustrious minds of the Retro Game Talk forum and one and for all, decide what are the 10 greatest games for every console ever made! Continuing with our trend of Nintendo systems, we have the Nintendo 64!

And surprisingly, no one nominated Banjo Kazooie!

And, this is also the first time one of my personal nominations didn't make it on the list! ::sadkirby

There's also another minor controversy to clarify, namely involving the severe amount of overlap between franchises on this list. Now, Super Smash Brothers is a massive crossover fighting game, so it's natural that both Link and Mario would doubly time it. But I ended up putting both Paper Mario and Mario 64 on the same list, in spite of both being part of the same franchise. But I deemed the two games to be so fundamentally different from one another, that I felt it was appropriate to have both on the same list, despite them both being Mario games.

This was, of course, the opposite case with Zelda. Both Majora's Maks and Ocarina of Time were voted for and Nominated, and while Majora is the better game, OoT was the more popular pick. And so, because Majora is essentially a glorified expansion of OoT, it got merged into the other Zelda game like I did with Final Fantasy V & VI in the prior SNES list. So, sorry if you voted for Majora's Mask, that would've been my pick too.

I'm also not too dedicated to the green I used in the promo images, since I kinda think that would be more appropriate for the Gameboy list, so expect that to be altered in the coming weeks as well.

Regardless, get your goofy asses in here and vote! Showing up all those old, out of date, and defunct game magazines what's-what is super important you guys!!!

The only one I played extensively on an actual N64 was Goldeneye, I am baffled by the amount of hours I put into the single player mode in that as a kid. I played ocarina of time, mario 64, smash bros on that said same N64 but I did not enjoy them as much as goldeneye, or rather they didn't hold my attention as much.

I did not really enjoy ocarina of time till it got it's facelift on the 3ds, I now love this game but Majoras mask exists with some mods on the 3ds making that also definitive, and for mario 64, the mods for the ds game on a 2ds make that the definitive version. Goldeneye it is for me ::hellmo

Ship of Harkinian got a fork called 2Ship2Harkninina that specifically plays Majora's Mask. So, being a decomp of an N64 game, that would make it the definitive version in my mind.

I got as far as getting the fierce deity mask when playing the 3ds one with mods, it used the n64 audio and retooled the game to basically otherwise play the same as the N64 version with the facelift of ocarina of time 3d and I prefer this as it looks just like the art I adored as a kid and the OG N64 games could not possibly have this level of fidelity, graphically, at the time.

The original game is still amazing but I loved the art style so much, and the 3ds version gives us that and is perfect with the mods, without the mods it is inferior to the N64 version, objectively so, regardless of the graphical facelift.

I am not knocking the original but I love the art for the game immensely and grezzo's intent was to not make them into twilight princess style remakes, which they admitted they could have done and actually intended to initially, but instead rather have them look pretty much as Nintendo possibly wanted them to look at the time if they could have done that based on the art style for the game.

I am waiting for the goldeneye aspect of all this to work on my vita, star fox 64 is able to run on vita now but the 3ds remake also did the whole art style aping thing that I have a soft spot for.

Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time definetly feel like they should get number 1 and 2. Those are some truly timeless games that have sort of gotten a second life through their modding and fan communities. Goldeneye is pretty dated but it still stands as the first propper console exclusive FPS, it's also a first for a few other things. Smash Bros feels like it should've become a genre a long time ago but most other studios who have tried to create their own spins haven't brough much to the table except their own IPs, it's another very noteworthy game. Paper Mario is a charming RPG and definetly the first widely popular Mario RPG, it also had a very unique art style.
The rest of the game are also wonderful but I don't have as much to say about them. I guess these are my top 5.
Also, you've made a very attractive thumbnail for this thread

Am I in the wrong timeline? I remember Bomberman Hero being hated for a long time since it's existence. What changed?

As for the others, I'm going to have to go with Sin and Punishment. I'm an Arcade-style Junkie, I just love a great on-rails shooter. The fact I can both move my character and aim independently, was already game changing for the time. And Treasure being Treasure, they made the N64 hardware work overtime with crazy set pieces without dropping a single frame. I like Mischief Makers too, but S&P takes it for me.

From first to last eh? Hmmm...
  • Conker's Bad Fur Day = The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

  • Super Mario 64
  • Paper Mario
  • Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards = Sin & Punishment

  • Super Smash Bros.
  • Bomberman Hero
  • Mischief Makers = Goldeneye
If I could only recommend ONE 64 game, it's gotta be CBFD, what an experience that game is.

I'm so happy that Bomberman Hero made it I cannot believe because is a divide tittle but I'm so happy

But I was surprised Banjo didn't make it?

Banjo wasn't even nominated. Diddy Kong Racing also wasn't suggested. @J8j was the closest as they suggested 10 games, one of which was Banjo, but when I asked them to narrow it down they said "Body Harvest" instead.

I think the general consensus was that Conker was Rare's golden goose on the N64.

Well, I'm suuuure glad Conker's Bad Fur day is gonna be in 3rd place over Bomberman Hero, Sin & Punishment & Paper Mario
::smug

I fucking hate tie breakers. However, in the end, it is I who makes the list in the end. Who's to say Conker isn't going to be 5th in this case?

If Smash didn't exist, I would've gone for Mischief.
