Thirty-one years after the adventures of Lieutenant Frank Drebin, a new sheriff is in town. When I heard that The Naked Gun was going to be remade, I was initially quite skeptical. So-called spoof movies that deliberately parody other films and genres in a silly way, have gone somewhat out of fashion. In the 1980s, films like Airplane , Spaceballs , and The Naked Gun were all the rage, but by the early 2000s, with films like Meet the Spartans, they had completely lost their appeal.

So, no one can just come along, replace the great Leslie Nielsen, and pretend that absolutely nothing has changed culturally in the last 30 years. When it was confirmed that Saturday Night Live director and The Lonely Island cast member Akiva Schaffer would be directing, with Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane producing, I wasn't particularly relieved. But I wanted to give it a chance, which turned out to be the right decision.

Is this funny or can it be removed?

The film uses the same infantile humor as the originals and mixes it with a hefty dose of slapstick. There were moments when I wanted to jump out of my seat with laughter, and then others that left me completely cold. Some jokes were so stupid they were actually good, and others worked as well as a joke. In other words: I honestly didn't expect to be so entertained. Also worth mentioning is the music, which provided unforgettable moments in the original installments.

The perfect cast

Finally to the heart of the film, and that, as so often, is the cast. Liam Neeson had the almost impossible task of replacing Leslie Nielsen in one of his most iconic roles, and it works better than expected. Not perfectly but I can't think of anyone who could have done a better job. Pamela Anderson also takes on the female lead with the necessary wink but they still manage to surprise you in a positive way.

My Conclusion

The Naked Gun is a successful reinterpretation of a genre that was considered irredeemable. Anyone who is looking for fun and humor will be well served here.

I watched The Naked Gun trilogy with my dad two or so years ago and I loved it. The movie hasn't come out yet im my country for some reason so I'm eagerly waiting to see it. If it is good like what I've heard so far I'm sure I'll have a good laugh. There aren't that many good comedies nowadays so it's nice when one comes out

I am not a fan of Liam Neeson doing humour. One of my top 3 western movies of all times is Schindler's List, and the saga Taken is awesome. He even does an amazing cast at Batman Begins.

There are many movies I am missing from him I would want to watch.

Great review! I haven't had the chance to watch it myself yet, but I'm eager to do so.

His Ra's al Ghul was really good.

Why can't they just create a new successful spoof film? Why all the reboots or semi-reboots? I saw the first 15 minutes of it and barely got a tickle. Same old formula, lesser quality.

I think Steve Martin would have been the perfect replacement choice

Yeah that's a good idea. Steve Martin wouldn't have been bad and funny.
Steve Martin doesn't exist in movies anymore & if he does he mustn't be doing well.

This is actually the whole reason why they stuck with Leslie Nielsen in Airplane! and later Police Squad.

He wasn't a comedy actor at all back in the 50s-70s. He was mostly in westerns and police drama shows. They had him essentially play the same serious role he usually did, but made it so everything going on was extremely ludicrous and buffoonish.

Which is why Liam Neeson is like almost perfect for this. He's got the gruff and rugged vibe you need to continue this series.

That makes sense. But I happen to experience some kind of type-casting for some actors. For instance, Jim Carrey for me makes humour movies, and when I see him doing other than that I feel strange and I am not a fan of it, regardless of how good is the movie. If an actor / actress grew up doing drama, I can't see it doing humour, even if the actor / actress is good, but that's on me :)

The Ra's al Ghul from arrow tv show is probably more intimidating and liam is from my country i cant take him seriously knowing he used to do comedy before action in the late 70s

Jim Carrey in the sonic movies is great.

I just happen to legally download this movie, I hope it's fun. But I don't have any hopes.
Liam Neeson strikes me as the least fun person on Earth, but maybe that's the joke?

The film is okay and entertaining.

just Watch unlega streamed.

So fk boring as hell, ok the IR doggies scenes was funny, whereelse the OG got me Tears Bursting Laughters lol continuosly.
Theres No Soul/enthuasism and so forced becomes a sore, Liam isnt funny hes dead serial.
Funny movie needs Funny Talents, they could just CGI Lesly.
It would be a good movie if it was serious, just cut the socalled funny clips.
6/10

Yes, it wasn't anything special but I'd say it was a bit entertaining. Yes, a comedian as an actor would have been better but whatever, maybe they'll do better with the next film.

I finally got around to watching this one and I had a great time.

It's just as stupid as the original trilogy. I actually just watched those original movies and the original Police Squad show for the first time like over last month and I had so much fun (except with the third movie which kind of sucked).

If you like a comedy movie that's just a gag every second with every line and scene filled with ridiculous bits then I highly recommend it.

liam neeson is finally old enough to play frank drebin, and sadly too old to play anything else.
