To me, a game that always defined the XBOX/360 era, outside of Halo, were action games like Ninja Gaiden Black & NG II. Or FPS games like Far Cry Instincts. Even Serious Sam and Doom 3 felt at home on XBOX, even though I never owned the OG XBOX, and we would go to a friend's to play it.

The most modern feeling XBOX 360 game right now (aside from Ninja Gaiden 4) is still Evil West. The game has all of the hall markings. Over-the-shoulder camera angel. Third person arcade shooting (no cover shooting thankfully) with twitch reflexes combined with a brawler. A large and muscular meaty dude kicking ass and gets more guns and melee options has the player progresses. Action command finishers and a campy grind house, old west aesthetic combined with vampires! It does it all well, while adding something new and fun.

Ninja Gaiden, my beloved

I'll add onto the Ninja Gaiden pick by also mentioning Dead or Alive 3 and 4

While I had played 2 before, 4 was when I started putting time into the game and really trying to learn it, so I've always associated the series with XBox.

But seriously, sci-fi games always felt like an Xbox thing to me. Other than Halo, you had Advent Rising, Armed & Dangerous, Mace Griffin: Bounty Hunter, Brute Force, American McGee's Scrapland, MechAssault 1 and 2, all of the Star Wars games, the Unreal games, Pariah, Project Snowblind, Deus Ex: Invisible War, Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and Assault on Dark Athena, Mass Effect, Too Human, etc.

Another thing I liked in OG Xbox games were large levels. Halo: CE had them, Armed & Dangerous had them, Galleon had them, and New Legends had them. Sometimes the levels could be too large, feeling empty, but it felt like an entirely Xbox thing.

I've never had any Xbox consoles, so here are my feelings about them in 2 categories:

1. What did I think of the consoles when they came out?
OG Xbox:
-Logical continuation of what western games were on the Mega Drive/Genesis or later the PS1 in the 90s: action games, mature themes, lots of sci-fi, space themes.
-Great results for a company that tried for the first time and that everyone knew for boring ass cubicle office Windows

360:
-Felt more commercial, making games for the "bros" that like brown-looking Unreal Engine 3 shooters. Most games of that generation are available on PC or PS3, so all gen 7 consoles didn't seem interesting to me.

Xbox One (X-Bone? :D):
-Could just as well have been a boring mid-range gaming PC.

Xbox Series S/X:
-Cool emulation features and backwards compatibility, therefore great value if you have old Xbox games. Otherwise PS5 and Switch have better exclusives.

2. What do they feel like today or in hindsight? (Now that we finally have decent emulators for them)

OG Xbox:
-I really love the cool and weird exclusives. I mean, on PC, we didn't miss out on Halo or Fable, but Phantom Dust, MecAssault, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Crimson Skies, Shin Megami Tensei Nine (hopefully in English soon)

360:
-A lot of great quality commercial stuff that you can find on other platforms, but the realy gems for me are the Live Arcade indie exclusives and really cool ports of old Rare titles. E.g.: Banjo-Kazooie is technically better on 360.

X Bone:
-I'm struggling to think of any good exclusives that I'll want to play once we get an emulator. Rare Replay, Killer Instinct (the reboot) and Halo 5. Nothing else comes to mind.

Xbox Series:
-Gen 9 is so far into its life cycle and I can't think of any exclusive game for this console that I'd want to play. Everwild is mildly interesting, but when I googled it now, it says that it's cancelled. :D Maybe this machine will be like the Vita: Once it's hacked, you'll get it to play all old Xbox games upscaled on your TV.

DOA4 was my first fighting game on the 360. I put a lot of hours into the game.

Platinum Games on 360. A wonderful time! I admit I don't blame Bayonetta on 360 much anymore, but still have the game. Rising I am never giving up. Vanquish I did trade in, but only because I got Bayonetta/Vanquish Double Pack on PS4 physically with the steel book case.

VANQUISH IS PURE XBOX 360 VIBES IS LIKE PEAK XBOX 360 VIBES

Crackdown deserved better. 2 was rushed and 3 was taken from David Jones and handed to Sumo Digital. Both were fine games but never reached the highs of the first. Crackdown had such great aesthetics that the sequels never got right.

Another good Xbox game from Vince Zampella's old studio is Men in Valor.

Bayonetta, Castle Crashers and Rock Band 3 are the most fun games I had with the console. Good times, first DLC content, and great multiplayer.

Due to the big push it was getting in the trades leading up to the Xbox's launch, Brute Force became THE Xbox game to me. It's still the first thing I think of when I think of the original Xbox.
