Liberation Maiden
You've likely heard this name before as it does tend to be a 3ds game that is recognized as underated in a lot of lists. Deservedly so. It's a short but highly enjoyable science fiction flight mech based shooter. Each of the five levels in the game are unique and engaging. It's a game you can easily finish in one sitting. Unfortunately, it does end rather abruptly, but you have to remember that the game was released in Japan initially as part of a larger collection called Guild 01.
The Legend of Zelda: Triforce Heroes
Triforce Heroes was a game that received a very unfair judgement when it released. At the time it was very popular to rag on new Nintendo releases, and after a fairly uneventful 2015, Triforce Heroes became a prime target for this. It didn't help that since the game wasn't very successful financially, the online servers were fairly dead or inactive.
But thankfully, due to the existence of discord, I was able to play the game before the servers went down. I have to say, I was very pleasantly surprised.
The game itself is well designed. The puzzles and bosses are a major improvement over Link Between Worlds which I thought were too easy. The best element of the game is the implementation of co-op. This is a game, where you HAVE to work with three other players to solve puzzles and progress. While this can be extremely tedious with randoms, if you're playing with friends either online or irl, it becomes very fun to solve puzzles and take down bosses together.
It's one of the best co op experiences that I've had in a video game.
I hope that Nintendo releases this game on switch again or makes a sequel. Although, I find that unlikely unfortunately due to its sales.
Kokuga
Kokuga is an extremely fun and unique arcade style shmup where you take control of a tank to make your way through levels filled with dangerous hazards. What sets it apart from other smhups is its pace.
This isn't a game where you're constantly pushed forward with non stop action, you have to make through the levels at your own pace and plan carefully. This is an incredibly difficult game and you'll need to use strategy to bypass tricky sections. There are no checkpoints, and if you die you go back to the start of the level.
Thankfully, you do have some advantages at your side. You're able to use cards via the bottom of the screen that grant you abilities, be it regenerating your health, unleashing a large devastating attack, or turning invisible to bypass enemies.
To top it all off the game has a great soundtrack and fantastic bosses.
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
Monster Hunter is not exactly an unknown niche series on the 3ds. The series saw its biggest success yet at the time thanks to 4U/G which sold over one million copies in the west, and 2 million in Japan.
Whenever people ask for 3DS recommendations, you'll almost always hear Monster Hunter 4 at least once.
A game in the same series that doesn't get enough praise is Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.
Usually, when brought up, people will tell you to play 4 instead. This is very unfair to MH3U, as it does many things to set itself apart from both its predecessors and sequels
First and most obvious, the underwater combat. While this takes getting used to, it adds a nice variety to the game. It's surprisingly intuitive since navigating your direction underwater is as easy as changing the direction of the camera.
Another unique element of 3U is Moga Woods. Think of Moga Woods as a far more accessible and easy to access version of expeditions. You can simply walk over to a gate and travel to Moga Woods at any time without having to navigate menus. This makes farming certain materials extremely accessible compared to later entries. You can also encounter monsters in moga woods, and since you're not on a quest you won't have to worry about dying too many times whilst fighting them.
MH3U is the last Monster Hunter game with a farm of some form.
Although, the full extent of it isn't instantly accessible, by the time you're in late high rank it'll significantly cut down the time you'll spend gathering materials for things like ancient potions.
The last thing I'll praise Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for is the pacing. This is one of the best paced Monster Hunter games. While 4 and generations both have an extremely easy low rank, and then a sudden difficulty spike in high rank, 3u remains fairly challenging in low rank so that by the time you reach high rank, you'll be prepared for the increase in challenge.
Overall, it's an addictive and very underated entry in the series. It also has one of the cutest girls in a Monster Hunter game
