So, the 90’s was a very different time for Pokémon. No merchandise was made in house, with in house assets, standards, and design sheets. This outsourcing was especially prevalent in the worldwide market, where the subject of today’s thread comes from.
This is a Play By Play Pikachu. He looks a tad funky, does he not? I mean, maybe a little, but “funky” is Play By Play’s whole bag.
Some of thier efforts tended to look good!
Many did not.
Without many references besides what I assume to be stock art, the designs of these plushes were… subject to decisions.
This isn’t even mentioning that these were carnival prizes, distributed in claw machines, bowling alleys… wherever cheap licensed merchandise can be found. If you’re of a certain age, I can almost confirm you saw some, but maybe not ALL of them.
Play By Play’s was based in Spain, by the way. Still are! They’re still around, mainly focusing on literal baby toys. But this wasn’t the only video game line of plushes they made, as they also made some VERY special looking Mario and Sonic plushes.
The Mario was part of a wider line, but Sonic was a one off. Truly horrific, he is.
That said, I do enjoy these guys! All of them! From the charming to the ugly, it’s a level of off model that you don’t get anymore. Without genuine bootlegs, anyway. But these were official! And many could pass as fairly solid plushes of the characters, if you had no other options. They’re certainly an eclectic bunch, but I enjoy them for what they are!
