Whole game is but this stage in particular is one of the most insane feats of coding I've ever seen just. in general in terms of any system.
Mind you this is the same console that could barely run Gradius 3

::omgdoom I love silpheed (that's the sega CD port for those that don't know) so much. Not the biggest fan of the genre, but my favorite shooter hands down! It's so simple, and the music and sfx are perfect. I can HEAR the laser sounds just looking at that embedded vid and every track is a banger ::heart

Jesus H, does that Slipheed GIF ever need an epilepsy warning 😵‍💫

I remember being floored by the subtlety at play in Wave Race 64. As someone who lives on the coast by the ocean, the environmental effects were spot-on. The fog burning off of Drake Lake after a few laps. The incredibly accurate sound of whales breaching and slamming back down into the water.

And, of course, the orange waters of Sunset Bay:

I remember seeing the game get ridiculed for this at the time, with some of the press claiming that the game went too far and "exaggerated" some of its visuals.

Meanwhile, this is an actual State Park near where I live:

The place? Sunset Bay State Park. Now, I am 100% sure that is a coincidence on the part of the Japanese developers, but... I can assure you, orange waters at sunset are absolutely a thing 😎

Sorry about the Silpheed gif, didn't consider that it could be problematic for some people.

Heh, don't sweat it! I made the comment halfway-jokingly. You're OK by me 🙌

For real, though? It is so hard going back to retro games because of the flashing. Only mildly bothered me as a kid, but as I've gotten older, I've found it to be too much, sometimes. I can squint my way through a few cases, but if it happens consistently enough (for example, when the screen flashes as you pull the trigger in a lightgun game) I just can't do it anymore.

On the plus side? It's helped me thin out my collection a little bit! Those flashy-flashy games are pretty easy to cast off to eBay, these days 😅

OK, I'm done hijacking your thread, I swear! Thank you for letting me say my piece 🤝

- The heat effect in Sonic 3 is perhaps the first time I saw an amazing visual effect:

- Gun light effect on people while someone shoots:

- The whole first level:

- The sun, sun light and sea:

Ah, thanks to 16-bits blast processing of Genesis we could enjoy such visual feasts!!! lolol
