Hmm, an era is coming to an end.

I mean, over 10 years is a pretty good run for a live-service.

Makes sense that they wanna focus on Marathon.

if you believe Bloomberg, it's not just destiny 2, there's no destiny 3 in development, bungie is gonna lay off a ton of staff and none of their suggested games are being greenlit, basically if the report is true, bungie is just 1 step above being shut down.

Yea, the game has been hemorrhaging players since The Final Shape because that expansion ended the storyline and 10 year plan they had for the game from the outset. Everyone moved on, it didn't need to keep going. There is verbage there that implies they still have some plans for the IP, but I hope those come in the form of Halo-esque packages. A standard campaign and some multiplayer offerings, no need to try and make Destiny 3.

Marathon is a great game that has really gotten dragged through the mud and with D2 finally hitting the point of not being an infinite source of income I worry for their future. A lot is riding on their next project.

Yeah, I heard something about layoffs earlier today and that new stuff wasn't even in the "incubation" period yet. I guess that just shows internally they put all chips on the Marathon bet and it didn't pan out at all. When really, if they'd at least put some resources towards something else as well, they'd have that to fall back on despite being in early stages.

My guess, at least for the moment, is they'll get one more title and based on the success of that they'll either stay open or get shuttered/sold.

Marathon's quality doesn't matter, it's asthetic is literally eye bleedingly bad and asthetics matter in a game your expected to potentially play for years.

Other problem is it's a extraction shooter, despite the profit numbers of tarkov and fortnite there's not nearly as many people who like extraction shooters as people are led to believe and those people aren't going to jump over to marathon from a game they've sunk thousands of hours and possibly dollars into, add to that marathon hasn't had it's first reset yet, i think the game is cooked if it doesn't make massive changes to draw in more people.

If they want to save marathon, they need to branch out what you can do in the game like a PvE mode, single player campaign might be a bit tough but would definitely help, even a true competition shooter style probably would go over better than extraction shooter, though they could keep it in as a primary game mode, relying on it is dangerous.

And for goodness sakes fix the asthetics, it's literally the worst artstyle i've seen in a game of this financial cost level and that's including concord.

The absolute last resort would be going free to play, but i don't think that could save the game as a extraction shooter

Bungie's done. On one hand, it sucks as someone who's been playing their games since the early '00s. On the other hand, it's not the same developer anymore. All of the big names (Joe Staten, Alex Seropian, Marty O'Donnell, Jaime Griesemer, Marcus Lehto, etc.) are gone. The only name I remember from back during their glory days that's still around is Jason Jones.

Destiny 2 was milked for way too long, grew long in the tooth, and them completely fucking over their players by removing paid story content via "vaulting," A.K.A. stealing, turned off a lot of their supporters, myself included.

As for Marathon, I have no interest in extraction shooters. The thought of playing longer matches only to die and lose everything isn't of interest to me. I have even less interest since they eventually wipe everything and you lose all of your loot that you spent hundreds, if not thousands, of hours acquiring. Piss off. No thanks.

I have never heard anyone discussing it, so I suppose it was inevitable.

Hope they don't lay off a bunch of people, though.

Nah, I love the art style. If it isn't for you I get it but there's nothing to "fix" there, it just isn't for you and that's fine cause not everything will be.

The problem with adding a PvE mode, especially this early, is that it just worries people. It makes people in PvP more ruthless because a lot of more casual, co-operative players will run to PvE with only the bloodthirsty people staying behind. Queue times might get longer, ranked mode might stop working entirely if the player population isn't there for proper skill based matchmaking etc.

You're right in that extraction shooters are niche and a game that is trying to be niche should never have had as big of a dev budget as it ended up with. Whoever wrote that check is a moron, whoever asked for it is equally silly. The sad reality is that its gonna slowly become a game that appeals to its existing fans less if it tries to shift to appeal to people who don't like it to begin with. Bungie has a largely deserved bad reputation right now and so people are shitting on Marathon whilst knowing next to nothing about it just because they hate the company and desperately want them to fail. You're right that it doesn't matter if Marathon is good or not because when you have the general public praying for your downfall, no one cares.

Marathon in a general sense is kind of unsalvageable unless they do something like offer a F2P version in some way to get more people to try it and see that there is a fantastic core there that shares a lot of qualities with the most beloved casual extraction shooter in ARC Raiders. Short of that though, it seems doomed to die a relatively slow and painful death. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see it getting much better no matter what they do. Again, people WANT Bungie to fail at this point and right now there is no shortage of bad news for those folks to jump for joy at.
