Hey. Hey you. Yes… you.
You like dumb variants? You like weird gaming history? You like companies in the late 90’s trying to fuse technology together like a mad scientist? You like learning about hardware you’ll never own, just because it’s interesting and fun?
Well, get a load of this thing.
Navi Hi - Saturn
You can learn more about it here!
In short: it’s a GPS device, Video CD player, Audio CD player, and SEGA Saturn. The Saturn alone can be three of those things, two of them out of the box, but the GPS functionality is the insane part to me. Like… this goes in your car. Why? Why would you put a SEGA Saturn in the front of your car? Why would you put this non-skip protected CD player at the front of your vehicle and trust it to navigate the landscape for you? What’s the methodology behind this? I don’t know. But I love it. It’s a fusion of tech that wasn’t meant to be put together. Imagine navigating the mountains and then playing Virtua Fighter at the top. Imagine driving and your passenger seat driver is level grinding in Grandia. Imagine popping Panzer Dragoon Saga into this thing and having the most unique road trip experience ever.
A Japan exclusive console variant. Should be obvious. Not to say other regions didn’t have some awesome variants too! Respect to Brazil for getting the white model 2 Saturn. They know game. But this weird system variant takes the cake for the most insane idea ever pitched. SEGA’s deal with Victor and Hitachi to make Saturns was an odd one in practice, especially after the system sold so well in Japan. Yet, I’m glad it happened. Because it led to this, and that’s really awesome.
Edit: I forgot to add that it’s a karaoke machine. Because of course it is.
