Hey. Hey you. Yes… you.
You like dumb variants? You like weird gaming history? You like companies in the late 90’s trying to fuse technology together like a mad scientist? You like learning about hardware you’ll never own, just because it’s interesting and fun?

Well, get a load of this thing.

Navi Hi - Saturn
You can learn more about it here!

In short: it’s a GPS device, Video CD player, Audio CD player, and SEGA Saturn. The Saturn alone can be three of those things, two of them out of the box, but the GPS functionality is the insane part to me. Like… this goes in your car. Why? Why would you put a SEGA Saturn in the front of your car? Why would you put this non-skip protected CD player at the front of your vehicle and trust it to navigate the landscape for you? What’s the methodology behind this? I don’t know. But I love it. It’s a fusion of tech that wasn’t meant to be put together. Imagine navigating the mountains and then playing Virtua Fighter at the top. Imagine driving and your passenger seat driver is level grinding in Grandia. Imagine popping Panzer Dragoon Saga into this thing and having the most unique road trip experience ever.

A Japan exclusive console variant. Should be obvious. Not to say other regions didn’t have some awesome variants too! Respect to Brazil for getting the white model 2 Saturn. They know game. But this weird system variant takes the cake for the most insane idea ever pitched. SEGA’s deal with Victor and Hitachi to make Saturns was an odd one in practice, especially after the system sold so well in Japan. Yet, I’m glad it happened. Because it led to this, and that’s really awesome.

Edit: I forgot to add that it’s a karaoke machine. Because of course it is.

This looks like if you poured a bunch of Mutagen on a GBA SP, I love it🥹
This is what happens to a GBA SP when it comes in contact with The Ooze from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles lmao

Hey! I can’t lie about my feelings on this thing!
Basically this:

Reminds me of the Dreamcast a so-called "expert" tried to sell me once: the lid was broken and wouldn't close, so they mounted a tiny screen on top of it and then worked a switch to the side to fool the console into thinking it was actually working as normal.

Just... Why? Was any of that shit cheaper than actually fixing the lid?

Modern problems require modern solutions.

They really said “we won’t fix the issue, we’ll build around it.”
They really said “it’s not a bug, it’s a feature.”
They really said “what if we did a goofy and made you pay for it?”

Maybe they really wanted to create a frankenconsole to show off how cool they were.

Didn't the PS1 have some kind of screen add-on? Or was it something built in? I remember seeing it.

Sure did:

My theory is that companies in the 90s were trying to hasten the world into the Jetsons future simply by means of Frankenstein-ing technology together until the end product was more than the sum of its parts.

Do we know if Sega sold a car mount for this thing?

Also, holy shit! ::omgdoom

The winning bidder was like "That belongs in a museum!"

(This allegedly is the photo of it, but it looks to me like them just balancing the thing on the console between the seats lol)

Also, I think that eBay listing says it was from 03. Either I can’t read, or that’s 2003. Who knows how high the prices run now?
