Imagine getting to compete on your favorite arcade game against dozens of other kids from all over the country.
Imagine playing for the chance of taking home the newest, hottest gaming consoles of their time (the PS2, the Dreamcast and the GameCube).
And imagine doing so on international television.
Ain't that nuts? Sure is... and that's why the Daytona USA tournaments (hosted by the videogame show "Nivel X") remain a staple of our collective childhoods.
Seriously, the influence this tournament had cannot be overstated... my friends and I would drop everything to watch it, and the people behind the show would shut down all other sections so the tournament could run the length of the episode, because people were THAT into it.
I have always regretted not signing up for it, but I was extremely young when this was a thing (and I sucked pretty badly at the game).
