These were such a godsend.

Imagine getting to compete on your favorite arcade game against dozens of other kids from all over the country.

Imagine playing for the chance of taking home the newest, hottest gaming consoles of their time (the PS2, the Dreamcast and the GameCube).

And imagine doing so on international television.

Ain't that nuts? Sure is... and that's why the Daytona USA tournaments (hosted by the videogame show "Nivel X") remain a staple of our collective childhoods.

Seriously, the influence this tournament had cannot be overstated... my friends and I would drop everything to watch it, and the people behind the show would shut down all other sections so the tournament could run the length of the episode, because people were THAT into it.

I have always regretted not signing up for it, but I was extremely young when this was a thing (and I sucked pretty badly at the game).

Thoughts?

That looks like it was such a fun time :)
I'd love to see an interview with some of these kids now as adults reflecting on their time there.

That would be nice.

I actually managed to interview someone from Super Campeones (football tournament for elementary school kids from all over the country, also broadcasted internationally) and it was quite the enlightening experience.
If you live in Buenos Aires, the best place to play Daytona USA is Acatraz in Almagro.
That's a bit out of the way for me, but thanks for the tip :)

Oh let me tell you, even if I was even good at it (or I thought I was) I wouldn't even try, I just know the second I make some mistakes, it's gonna look like this

The Daytona USA theme song will forever be stuck in my head, lol.

The gap between each comment is crazy lmao. Anyway, another Daytona USA enjoyer

I always am looking at older threads to see if I can get people talking again!

There’s just something special about seeing people REALLY engaging with a topic. My dream is to come up with a topic thread someday that gets 30 pages of replies or something! Something that really makes people happy to talk.

To be honest, Daytona will never die. It’s too big. Too important. As long as it’s functional in arcades, it’ll make an impact on people.

I literally found a copy for my Saturn yesterday lmao!

That's awesome, dude :)

I'm sure you will, too.

We reward passion here.

I have a topic I’ve been wanting to post for a bit here, about “your favorite video game announcer quotes” or something of the like. Very prescient for Daytona, as “And they’re underway” as well as “You got a scratch on the car!” (for when you bump a wall but don’t collide) live rent free in my head forever.

My problem is that I’ve been not wanting to make AS MANY threads. Too many threads means that people are spread too thin for things to reply to and engage with, which kind of defeats the purpose.

PLUS I would put it in “General Retro Gaming”, but I don’t want to drown out my own “Question for Japanese Forum Users” thread because that’s been an awesome line of communication and insight for me so far. Beyond making topics, I also love to engage with passionate people who are in cultures that I don’t often hear DIRECTLY from.

Damn that's amazing, what a goal. I'm sure you can achieve that someday
