If you loved Techno, Trance, Metal, certain kinds of pop, Industrial, or hip hop… it’s the Mega Drive you wanted to play on. I want a thread to celebrate the absolutely amazing music that this system could make.

I have to start by telling everyone to PLEASE NOT SLEEP ON THE ADVENTURES OF BATMAN AND ROBIN! The music was done by Jasper Kyd and it’s some of the most wild industrial and rave music you could bang out of the system.

I have to highlight a few other favorites from the soundtrack:

I’ve been blasting “Dark Studio??” all day and it’s seriously so good. This game just has all the best music and some songs go LONG. Like, 5, 6, 9 minutes long. On the Mega Drive. Insane overachieving being done here.

"Craziest Genesis Music"
Yeah, that thread title was pretty much asking for this.
Not what we’re here for, but it’s the music we deserve.
I will always wonder how the music ended up like this. Maybe it was designed on another synth first and they tried to smash it into the Mega Drive without understanding the sound hardware? Who knows.

For me Gauntlet 4's soundtrack always stood out because the sound driver they used for the game sounds so unlike other Genesis music.

And then the other that always comes to mind is Rocket Knight Adventures boss theme and how it just drops the bass as low as it can get away with, and then distorts the heck out of it.

Honorable mention to Popful Mail on the Sega CD for combining the CD's PCM channels with the Genesis FM synth to great effect instead of going solely PCM or Redbook Audio. Gives it a real "Genesis Plus" kind of feel.

Gauntlet is a good choice! It can sound orchestral sometimes, which isn’t a sound you usually hear from the Genesis!

And then Rocket Knight does the same, but it’s more of a “this is the power of FM sound” kind of music.

oh wait you've meant good sounding genesis music... I mean I was very close with this one, am I?

The amount is times that I've listened to these soundtracks is more than I can even count. By FAR some of best compositions you'll hear on the Sega Genesis.

Bro thought they could slip in that Super Castlevania IV without anybody noticing.

The other two examples though are awesome showcases of FM sound! The Shinobi III track in particular is a great example of how the Genesis sounds in my head, with a grungy and gritty sound to the synth.

That particular song is on the Genesis though actually, it plays very briefly in Bloodlines.

Oh shit, I didn't notice. I meant to do the Castlevania Bloodlines version, which for my money is the better version of the two
