the best emulation to play Nintendo 64

If you're asking about a Good Emulator to use for N64 try ares.

Honestly in regards to N64 Emulation specifically, if you're planning to mostly plays Nintendo-releases in N64 like Mario or something even Mupen is enough.

  • RMG if you want to play with enhancements and a interface familiar to Project 64 but with a modern mupen core and without nagware
  • Ares for cycle-accurate emulation (more heavy on resources)
  • Simple64 if you want a middle ground between those two. The developer seems to have started to work on a new emulator called Gopher, but I haven't tested it for myself yet.
Those are modern options, if you're targeting super low end or old computers then you'll have to resort to old emulators as well

In my experience (Mac owner) it’s either Retroarch or OpenEmu (and I think both use Mupen)

Just assign the Rumble button on your gamepad and it should work.
I have tried to do that and it didn't work, at least with my gamepad (Retrofighters). Does it work for you? What gamepad do you have?

Did you check to use the Rumble Pak?
If you are asking if I have changed the default settings on the emulator? I didn't.
Where do you do that? ::thinking

Unfortunately, I can't say right off the top of my head since I'm away from my PC, but there should be an option to enable the Rumble Pak within the Controller menu or something along those lines.

I'm surprised that even in 2025 N64 emulation is still more or less messy.

I've still enjoyed games but it has that janky feeling...

PS: Never use Project64 ever again, it's not good....

Does RMG recognize joystick imput well? I've been using Project64 all my life but for some reason it doesn't recognize my joystick and I think it's time for me to try another emulator

True, idk what is it about the N64 being so tricky, it's either the performance or the textures, there's always something

Retroarch with mupen64 core, and if your PC is powerfull enough use parallel.

I'm using an Xbox One Controller, Rumble Pak or in this case vibration works. I assigned LB button as Rumble.
That's a different game - GoldenEye 007, isn't it? Do you also have rumble in Wave Race?
I don't have any Xbox controller but, beside the retrofighters, I have a PS5 one.
Goldeneye works and Wave race doesn't. I definetely assined a button as rumble in all occasions. In fact, I even assigned the rumble to different buttons. It didn't work.

As far as I know the Shindou version of Wave race does have vibration.

It does. But does it have working rumble on that emulator?

Yes, it does. I was using GoldenEye 007 for an example.
Goldeneye rumble works on that emulator for everyone, for me too. Great!
The question though, is if the rumble of that specific rom: Wave Race Shindou with the English translation - works for you, on that specific emulator: Ares? Could you test it?
