The Akaneia Build The Akaneia Build is a fan-made mod (modification) for Super Smash Bros. Melee. It was created by Team Akaneia, a modding group. The mod is built on a system called m-ex, which enables expanded content in Melee. Features: New Playable Characters The build keeps all 26 of Melee’s original characters (or 25, depending on how Zelda/Sheik are counted) intact. It adds bonus characters — as of v1.0, there are 7 new fighters, bringing the total to around 33. Notable additions include Wolf (from Star Fox), Tails, and King Dedede. New Stages In addition to Melee’s original 29 […]

I was seriously impressed with how they did with Tails, considering he had no Smash Bros moveset to base it on, not even an assist trophy.
I agree that with already existing models, animations and frame data it's "easier" (while still being a challenge) to port a character than making one from scratch.

Tails really has an interesting moveset that fits the character.

For a long time Melee's modding has been dormant (I mean, I like 20XX and Silly Melee but these were just balance hacks rather than adding new content). I find it genuinely impressive that they added new characters to the roster (especially Wolf and Dedede) while keeping them close to their Brawl incarnations.

It's like seeing a "what if Melee wasn't rushed and came out in 2002 instead of the game we got" kind of scenario.

When it comes to Smash Bros hacks I could confidently say that the trinity would be Smash Remix, Akaiena and finally Project Plus for Smash 64, Melee and Brawl respectively.

I think that's a necessary evil for these kinds of Smash mods. With how big their updates can be, having characters and stages that have to be unlocked and tied to saves that need to be updated to work with the new version would be more effort than it's worth. Can you imagine Smash Remix (a game with 34 new characters and 100 new stages) having Smash 64/Melee style unlocks? You'd either have to dumb it down like what Smash Ultimate did (making it a pointless slog), or would require 30-40 hours of single player gameplay to slowly unlock everything.

Edit: Oops double post
personally, i do wish that it at least started at the title screen like the original. shouldn't be much modding around that, and since bonus characters have adventure mode/classic mode ending visuals too i don't see why not

Thanks for updating where I left off Spike, I've been slacking lately... Anyways, I'm pretty sure they plan on adding more content in the months to come which is exciting. This is a really nice romhack

mod is cool, but have...issues,first it starts right at character screen (not at logo screen) and also everything unlocked at Gallery with trophies, and stuff, its more interesting unlock those myself )

It's a great one that expands the base content of the Super Smash Bros. Melee that we all know as playable characters, especially the inclusion of Sonic and Tails, new battle scenarios and much more, although it doesn't know very well if in the future there will be more extra content for the mod and some bug fixes, etc.
