Has it happened to you? A game that fills all the boxes, that has everything you like in a game, but, for one reason or another, you don't like it. Could be that it has 1 mechanic which destroys everything, or the story being bad, or stuff being poorly implemented, etc.

For me, its Supreme Commander, sure its cool to have the massive armies and unit variety, but at the end of the day, its a slow strict build order RTS, and the massive map works against it once you realize how slow most units are, as well as how fragile they are, don't even get me started on how sweaty FAF is.

Do you have any game that makes you go, that ain't it chief?

The first thing that comes to mind is probably The Outer Worlds? On paper, it's a fun sci-fi take on a CRPG from the people who brought you Fallout: New Vegas....and it is!

It's just not *quite* enough. It's a little too safe, a little too short, a little too "as expected". A functional technical upgrade to games like New Vegas that gives you what you want but little else.

That said, I have a feeling the sequel will probably be the game Outer Worlds was meant to be in the first place. Fingers crossed!

Hollow Knight. I love that kind of game, I like the moody vibe, but man did I not want anything to do with it after about an hour. Not sure why.
I'm the exact same way. I really don't know why, and I've given it like three or four tries at this point. It should be a perfect game for me, but it just bores me to death.
Great music, look and atmosphere, though.

A pick of my own is probably The Witcher 3. I love fantasy, I especially love fantasy centered on a single protagonist, I love the setting, the music, the way it looks, but I just can't stand how it feels to play, in every way from movement, to combat, to menus etc.
Every time I try to get into anything Witcher related I just feel like I could be picking Conan instead and be way more entertained.

I've dropped games for a lot less "sins" than what these two do, but they just manage to bore my brains out.

OMG. Someone else! I wanted to love that game and play it for months, but I felt like I was driving a broken forklift.

Witcher 2 did that for me, and i just assumed 3 was the same, so i didn't play it.

Seems that my assumption was correct.

one i recently dropped was Prodeus. very competently made shooter with great feel for the weapons, but the progression being tied to collectibles and pretty much guaranteeing a backtrack through earlier levels, just completely killed the pacing for me.

Nioh.
I still cant really figure out why I wasn't having fun. I love Dark Souls, I like the feudal japan theme, and it seemed like it would be a great game for me. I played it for like a dozen hours before I realized I just wasn't really enjoying it the way I do the Dark Souls series. I didn't finish it and I never even played the sequel.

For me it was the ki pulse mechanic. I couldn't wrap my head around it well enough so I ended up freezing all the time and getting my ass handed to me. The rest was cool though.
I do want to try the sequel sometime though, but I haven't been able to justify a purchase for a game I'm so unsure of.

Destiny. Has everything I like in a game, distinctive weapons, 3 weapon limit, nice movement, cool environment. I wish it was a single player level based game instead. I do not like mmos or live service games, I cannot get into them. I don't like having to dedicate myself to a game like that, its really boring to me.

The Gundam Breaker series. I love Gundam, I love gunpla, and I love Gundam action games. However, the appeal just never stuck to me and the unit customization is kind of pointless. It's one of those series where you get a lot of random equipment and some parts are notably better than others. So what happens is that instead of making a cool customized gunpla, you end up with a mixmash of parts that looks like crap but has the best stats. Admittedly, I haven't played Gundam Breaker 4 yet, waiting for a sale, so this one might fix some of my problems with the series.

My kingdom for a Gundam game where the mechs actually feel fun and powerful, I think the Musou titles are the only exception!

Resident Evil Village. Yeah. The gameplay feels like a perfect melding of VII: Biohazard's first person perspective and scares with 4 and 5's actionization, and the environments are beautiful, but the storyline is, in my opinion, the worst the main series has ever featured. Yes. Even worse than 6 (which was already badly written).

I think the storyline was written more for self-righteous meretricious game "critics" aka. Video Essayists than it was for Resident Evil: Instead of continuing VII's plot, the story has insane delusions of grandeur, trying to be this dark fantasy fairytale about Fatherhood, and not only is RE not the kind of franchise for that sort of thing, but the end results basically go out of their way to wreck the entire series, even rendering everything up to this point worthless by revealing that Rose Winters (the damsel in distress) is Eveline's successor, making Chris, Jill, Leon, Claire and Ethan's accomplishments all moot to bring Alice into the game canon.
No wonder IX is supposedly ignoring the Winters duology as a whole to do its own thing.

Controversial Hot Take. I want to like the Fire Emblem series, but its pretty clear the series is not for me despite it being the granddaddy of Strategy RPGs for video game consoles. Hence I flip flop on either loving it or hating it.

It checks most of the boxes I like such as the characters, their relationship support interactions, and the unit stat gameplay mechanics such as Speed and Weight for how much it impacts your units in dodging/combating.

However, I don't like the fact that mages, staff users, and spellcasters in general cannot do Area of Effect attacks. Most if not all single unit and classes (except archers and long range magic users) fights enemies one on one with 100% counterattack which is kinda boring and makes them feel the same. A Javelin Cavalier vs a Mage. They're the same thing to me as both have ranged options and will dance on the one on one battle system with 100% counterattack. Not to mention promoting units with limited items doesn't sit well with me when you should just be given the option to promote them at level 10. Weapon Durability is also a tedious inventory management of a chore for units. Oh and of course Perma Death cause I "love" restarting every single chapter if one of my favorite waif- I mean units die due to RNGesus trolling me on my strategy.

In other words, I prefer the Shining series from Sonic Software Planning aka Camelot Software Planning (aka Pre-Camelot not Camelot nowadays where they are making Mario Golf) with not only their SRPGs like Shining Force, but even their JRPGs as well such as Shining in The Holy Ark that is practically a dungeon crawler Golden Sun RPG for the Sega Saturn.

Hollow Knight is a big one for me too, which was already mentioned.

Two others for me are Sekiro and Bloodborne in my case - parrying in most games is a fun mechanic for me, and I like the aesthetics of Bloodborne. Playing games known for their harder difficulty is not an issue for me, either.

I also like a few soulsborne games (namely Demon Souls and Dark Souls 1), so it's not an issue with fromsoft's games as a whole, but something about Sekiro and Bloodborne didn't grab me. I stopped playing both of them only a few hours in. The games are well-made, no doubt, but I really couldn't jive with the way they felt to play for some reason.

I recently refunded a game on steam called Glitchpunk. An Indie game heavily inspired by Grand Theft Auto 2. I really like GTA2, those vibes are immaculate, I love the retro-futuristic dystopian setting the game has, and the humor really pops. And Glitchpunk has caught my eye for about 4 years now, the guy who made it had some issues during development and had to drop it before finishing it. But recently he actually finished the game, so I decided to pick it up on sale, and the actual game itself was horrid. It controlled like someone was constantly pushing against me as I moved and the aiming was terrible. The Cyberpunk aesthetic was cool but it couldn't really hold me.

Final Fantasy XII. I hate most of the cast :< and ffs I wish the speech bubbles on NPCs would change color after you talked to them until they had something new to say. Those things ruined the experience for a game I should love.
My thoughts exactly on ff12... I even got some hate on a comment section about this one time for saying I didn't like the combat as much. it just didn't click with me.

Gundam Breaker 4 is pretty decent, though I will always be partial to the Gundam VS games from the PS2/PSP era.

Most of the games mentioned here are big ones that I also agree with. Hollow Knight, Witcher 3, FF12. Especially Hollow Knight tho. For me, a game really has to grip me with the gameplay first and foremost. If the story is excellent too, then I'll be hooked. Unfortunately a lot of games can't seem to scratch either itch for me these days.

Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix and Devil May Cry 3 have forever imparted the impression of hacking and slashing my way through hordes of enemies and crazy bosses in style that a lot of games can't see to replicate. Also I kinda really hate DMC5. V sucks, and Nero plays like ass. I hate his arm. Hot take i think lol

I love DMC5 but I agree that V sucks. Idk what they were thinking with his gameplay. He's a cool character but his combat is strange. Nero plays about the same as 4 for me except for the arm thing he's got there. Still think 3 is the best though.

DMC5 has what I call, Vergil syndrome. AKA, I only want to play the Vergil parts of it LOOOOL. Having three playable characters in the main game was such a blunder tbh. Not enough Dante, or even Nero. Anytime discount Kylo Ren was on the screen I had such a hard time continuing on playing lol

I get that. Vergil is fun in every game you can play as him in. I don't mind the multiple characters though. I mean, I liked 4. And for Hack and Slash games I tend to enjoy the ones with multiple playstyles and characters. Ninja Gaiden is still at the top for me.
