If there’s one thing the Polygonal Age contributed to gaming history, it’s the heightened sense of immersion in horror games (or games featuring horror sequences).

But what about the Sprite Age? I can’t think of many examples, so I’d love to see the ones that could make a player tremble in their chair or couch.

"I Have No Mouth..." must be truly terrifying (I only read the short story and it disgusted me) ::sickening

Tame by today's standard, but definitely had me rattled as a kid.

Same with some of the visuals in Splatterhouse and scenarios in Zombies Ate My Neighbours!

For modern pixel horror, the best I've played is "Imscared".

I also think the c64 combination of colour palette and sound chip was good for lo-fi horror atmosphere

I think I would make that deal.

Wasn't Splatterhouse an action game?

Give it a try and see what you think (if you haven't already). That port of the game runs faster than it is supposed to, making every enemy, every movement and every piece of music happen 17% faster than it should.

Most people hate the music in this version for that very reason, but I've come to love it. It adds it's own sense of atmosphere that's unlike anything else I've ever played. I legitimately love that game.

I dunno about sprite age horror games but Yume Nikki and World of Horror come to mind when I think of sprite-based spooks. Yume Nikki’s pretty well known for being unsettling most of the time and outright creepy the rest. World of Horror is a black and white roguelike RPG inspired by Junji Ito’s works and sees the player exploring a small town, solving mysteries and staying alive to stop the summoning of an ancient god.

I got interested in Yume Nikki.
