All in Japanese but nothing that the almighty google translation can't solve, and most of them don't need a master in Japanese to play, just the basics.

Rapid Reload. It has a lot of similarities to Gunstar Heroes

Assault Retribution is a better Contra than the actual Contra entries on PSX.

MDK is a funny game, it got tons of hype when it came out, like everything Shiny Entertainment released in the '90s... then everyone acted like it never existed. I don't remember hearing about the sequel, and the series died out after two games.
I love Alundra, but I don't think it's some unknown game among current or former PS1 owners.

Seeing as no-one's mentioned it yet

The Rapid Angel. A pretty good beat'em up/platformer hybrid. It's in Japanese and there's no fantranslation available so you won't get much out of the story but you don't need to to be able to beat the game comfortably and the gameplay is great. Just make sure you don't abuse the cat if you don't want to get the bad ending ::winkfelix

D is another "well-known once, forgotten name" game. That's because it was kind of an evolutionary dead end, from the brief period where we thought pre-rendered CG was impressive enough for regular people to buy a pretty niche adventure horror game. I finally played D a year or two, btw. It's decent, the flashback scenes are still stylish and effective. D2 is completely different but it's pretty good too, despite some flaws (mostly lots of overlong dialogue that needed to be edited).

Vandal Hearts 2.
Many seem to dislike this game because its not like the original Vandal Hearts but as someone who played both for the first time I find VH2 the superior game.
While the art direction seems dry, it actually fits the setting very well and besides the magic animations are amazingly well done.
I like the story and writing better than FFT. FFT, not even the psp Shakespeare version, tries too hard to sound memorable so doesn't feel natutal.
VH2 characters speak like someone normal would.
Also feel the character and art makes the very serious story have the weight it needs since its relatively realistic and character sprites arent chibi like FFT or TO.
Gameplay seems something people find either too hard or easy. To me it was a middle ground, specially if you get a save and do advanced mode. And now that we have a patch that makes it play like FE (Enemy and Player phases) then there's now an option for those not a fan of its gameplay.
Anyways one of my favorite retro games. I kinda struggle to get into games but VH2 caught me from the go. Such an intro.

The only bad thing about Vandal Hearts 2 is the music, everything else was fine.

Hard disagree. I freaking live the OST. Its been on my phone playlist since I played it and its amazing how good still is.
