Which iteration of this hack would you recommend over all others? I'm not looking for obscene difficulty, just want to enjoy some tecmo bowl, as a friend of mine has been playing the most recent iterations of Football games, and his enjoyment has made me want to enjoy some classic football gaming.

I'd wager anything but the hardtype ones.

Tecmo Super Bowl was always a favorite of mine as a little guy. NFL 2k2 on the dreamcast was the only football game to really come close (as far as fun factor) for me. Though the entirety of official franchised sports games being monopolized by EA in the 2000s is probably a big factor in contemporary sports gaming becoming shit.
nfl blitz and that mutant game were kind of fun too.. ... ... ...

2k5 is still being updated by fans, too, incredibly enough, though installation and setup are a lot more involved.

I feel like this football game is more complete than the Madden NFL 25 (2024) and the 26 that's coming out as well. and taking into account that it only has 32 teams.
