Talking Point #9: Hilarious Media Portrayals

Waoh! Three articles in a row? After a long hiatus?! No, I promise I haven’t been kidnapped, although that would be pretty funny. In any case, welcome to another issue of “Talking Point”, our magazine-style series of articles! We’re really itching the double digits, so today I’d like to discuss one of my favorite topics!

Has your favorite characters been portrayed oddly in external media? I don’t mean things like their helmet looking a bit off, or their voice sounding a bit weird, I mean their entire persona is practically an entirely new entity! This is quite common in video games, especially the older you go. These days it still happens, such as with Geralt of Rivia from The Witcher series getting increasingly handsome with each passing game, or Nathan Drake basically looking like a babyface in the Uncharted movie. But those are rather tame compared to Mega Man being green, or Simon Belmont getting a chin implant surgery, or Kid Icarus looking like a creepy ugly gremlin.

Those were all in the same cartoon, by the by.

No, today we’re focusing on the truly bizarre. Best part? We don’t even need to broaden our horizons, we’re going through a theme today, a very blue and rocky theme, if you will.

1- Ruby Spears

IMG_0003.jpeg

Ahh, our good pal. Ruby, ruby, ruby, what more could be said about this that hasn’t been said already? I typically take a harsh snarky attitude towards the 80-90s era of goofy game adaptations. However, I sometimes see this snark misinterpreted as sincere hate, and I wouldn’t want that to disrupt a reader’s experience so for the sake of maintaining a good spirit of fun, we will tone it down a notch. Still, I’m on full-snark mode 24/7 regardless, so rest assured.

While the alternative version of the Ruby cartoon with all the chibi designs did look promising, it’s challenging to tell purely based on that what the cartoon was gonna be like, so we’re only left with the hilariously proportionate, ultra buff Megaman. It takes a little getting used to but it’s less jarring when the DLNs/DWNs are on-screen. I still prefer the cute and cuddly aspect of Rockman however, so the look of the show remains a turn-off for me even today.

But, you’ve seen the memes. You’ve seen the useless Cutman memes, Gutsman’s large behind, the Mega Derp, Pharoahman’s punch, Hardman being hard (yes, really), it’s like an endless well of memery, so it’s a fun entry to start out with.

2- Captain N

IMG_0005.webp

Now I’d like to start out by saying that I actually really like the Captain N cartoon. Mostly ironically though. It’s not really a show known for its… stellar writing, nor particularly appealing designs, but there’s a great reason why that weird, bizarre Simon Belmont smile became such a meme. Also, I’m not a Metroid fan, but Mother’s portrayal tickles my funny bone quite well too. No lost love for Icarus though.

Seriously, I love this guy to bits. He’s hilarious.
I gotta say, is it REALLY true that Megaman is green because the people working on the show had a broken TV? That seems quite superfluous. What, was their box art also broken too? Because while Megaman 1’s American box art may be wrong in all sorts of ways, I’m confident it was still blue last time I checked. So I suppose we can choke this one up to pure negligence. Roll also looks incredibly ugly here… okay, this show is cursed, let’s just move on to something less conspicuous.

3- Bad Box Art Megaman

IMG_0006.jpeg

FINALLY, YES!

You have no idea how badly I wanted to talk about Bad Box Art Megaman, a joke born to parody the horrendous yet oddly charming North American boxarts of Megaman.

Initially, It may seem that our poor little Blue Bomber can’t catch a break (Well in this one he isn’t really “little” but he’s probably still poor. Especially judging by that costume), but I’d like to argue that this was not made in poor taste, despite the less than fortunate timing.

Really, had this been made when Capcom cared more about Megaman, then BBMM would’ve had a better legacy. There’s so much to love about him in hindsight. The moveset, his “weapon”, slightly misshapen helmet to him being Roll’s errand boy, the hilarity doesn’t stop. I love that he’s just some loser, I find it even more hilarious he’s not even a robot. He’s just… some guy.

BBMM thankfully left a pretty fun legacy behind him, as evident by the fantastic Tumblr fan-comic I used to read back in the day. It had its own lore and everything, it even occasionally made BBMM-adjacent versions of characters like Tron! It had a lot of love and care put into it! Do give it a read if you stumble across it, here’s a cute snippet.

These are so incredibly charming. I was really addicted to them back in 2012.

Got any ridiculous media portrayals of your favorite characters? Leave a comment below! Also, you can suggest topics as well. I’m always all ears! Thanks for reading!

POST PRODUCTION NOTES:

I’m currently trying to fix broken headings issues. These didn’t show up even in the preview before posting the article and it’s unfortunately the result of google doc having terrible compatibility with XenForo, it’s out of my control.

An entry from script was scrapped from the article because of pacing I was going for and because I wanted things ending on a positive note, and Dead Rising 4’s genuinely awful portrayal of Bass (seriously, why did they give him Metal Blade?! He’s not from Megaman 2!!), was just gonna make me really sour. But there’s your FYI for the day.

I actually have two more pieces planned for the week before taking another hiatus. I got comments about how fast my workload so I once again assure you only stockpiling these, I’m just a writing freak when I feel like it. Trust me, if I let a script sit in the oven too long, it’s gonna get re-written from scratch regardless.

It may be hard to believe, but I never watched Ruby Spears Mega Man.

Bad Box Art Mega Man is an abomination who should have never existed.

Bass? Don't you mean Bass Cross MegaMan? /j

That is actually what they used as basis. They worked on the X costume before the Bass one, so not only did DR4 get bass wrong, they quite literally made him a bootleg X. A fate worse than death.

Well, Bass DID look a lot like X when he was first conceptualized...

I’m well aware. DR4 poorly represented everyone in it. Even one of the weapons used for X was this weird wrecking ball that does not exist anywhere in Megaman. A lot of stuff in that game was made with negligence and more out of spite since the devs allegedly didn’t even want to make a DR game at all, so it’s no wonder Capcom Vancouver eventually got the axe. It’s obvious no one on the team wanted anything to do with Capcom. Oh well, at least they referenced Ghost Trick.

The best thing about Bad Box Art Mega Man, at least in Cross Tekken where he was playable obviously, is it was such an ultimate troll that he broke the game. You could fly entirely off the map with an infamous glitch (I forgot exactly how it you triggered it, you had to I think activate your gem in the air?) and just win by time out. The first official grand finals of an unofficial Capcom sanctioned tournament of SFxTekken was two players who both picked BBAMM, then the first guy who got a hit in just did the glitch and won by timeout.

Cross Tekken will never not be hilarious. If I remember, they took their sweet time patching the glitch out as this was in Capcom's dark period.

i love dopey mega man in the usa show. looking back at his reactions to every got my laughing as i know he never acts like that in the games.

I love Megaman in Street Fighter x Tekken because I choose to see him as what he was intended to be: a video game character with such a great legacy that it is able to laugh at itself. At the time that the DLC character was being developed, they were working on Megaman Legends 3, Megaman Universe, Maverick Hunter, and more. By the time it release, everything was either canceled or announced and then canceled. So it was salt in the wound instead of an in-joke.

As for ridiculous portrayals of characters, I have a ton. That's actually a part of my next article because there was a design trend in the mid 2000s to early 2010s of developers insisting on making their characters gritty, dirty, and serious. Instead of making them cooler, it only made them look stupid. Of course, Nathan Spencer is a great example of this because someone in the character design wing unironically thought that a white guy with dreadlocks and a dirty undershirt looked cool.

Ahh yes ! Ruby spears Megaman cartoon .

The Intro is still peak fire and perfect megaman depiction (german and american version) but the actual show was not good . Unintentionally funny but alot of stuff was faithful from the videogames while some huge errors cant be ignored .

But somehow i like the show. Especially that loud and out of nowhere but cool shout out of megaman when he says " PLAESMEH PAOWUÄER !!!!!! " hypes me up . And i dont know why .

Is it blashemic to every Megaman-fan out there ? Not really .

Is it bad ? Yeah but in fun way .

PLAESMEH PAOWUÄER ???!!! FUCK YEAH !!!!

Honestly, the Redesigns of a Video Game Character are sometimes good, average or bad. But the best one for me is the one from Mega Man '94 (Ruby Spears) although it has muscles and squares because they tried to respect more or less the original design of the character we know and The worst in my opinion is from the Mega Man of '87 (From the Horrendous cover of the first game of the same name) that design thing does not do it justice and it seems of a Run-of-the-Ordinary Superhero Character (But without a cape) than anything else but less the essence *Mega Man* that characterizes him and on top of that they did not respect the original design of the character in the least. Because the other one I don't know because I haven't seen the Captain-N series but hey, a very curious and satisfying review.

Capcom's dork age, the one where they had this "We must appeal to western gamers" mentality and in result we got 'Donte'.

Off kilter portrayals are fine in a vacuum, but I deeply dislike media revisionism (liberties taken in certain adaptations).

I saw the Ruby Spears Mega Man as a kid after playing Mega Man X which introduced me to the Mega Man series. And while the show was so cheesy, I had a fun time watching it.

Speaking of hilarious media artworks, Bombmerman has a fair share of awkward designs.
