So, @Another Iori earlier today came up with a brilliant thread for the Super Nintendo: a thread that barred folks from talking about the most popular games as to focus on the underappreciated titles in the library. As cool as that was, it got me thinking about the Genesis.

FOR THIS THREAD, TALK ABOUT ANY GAMES THAT ARE NOT:
  1. Sonic the Hedgehog
  2. Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  3. Sonic the Hedgehog 3
  4. Sonic and Knuckles
  5. Streets of Rage 2
  6. Phantasy Star IV
  7. Comix Zone
  8. Any Puyo Puyo game (including Mean Bean Machine)
  9. Altered Beast
  10. Rocket Knight Adventures
  11. Musha
  12. Mortal Kombat (any of them. None.)
  13. Vector Man
  14. Truxton
  15. Mega Man: The Wily Wars
  16. Gunstar Heroes
  17. Earthworm Jim
  18. Aladdin
  19. Castlevania: Bloodlines
  20. Contra: Hard Corps
  21. Thunder Force IV
  22. Pulseman
  23. Ecco The Dolphin
  24. Alien Soldier
  25. Shinobi III
The poor Mega Drive, often, has the issue of being associated with only a few titles. I tried to come up with most of the heavy hitters that overshadow other games. You can see my own stream of consciousness as I decided the list :p

I really liked this prototype as a kid, it was so interesting. Used to play it on PS2

I would talk about Chakan

This game was soooooo tough. I played the hell out of it but never beat it. The rom taunts me from my emulation folder to this day. I still need to go back to it and try again.

The Mega Drive version of Sorcerian. Doesn't port any of the existing scenarios but instead has 10 completely unique ones. Some mechanics and such seem to have been given small updates as well. This version is highly regarded in the Japanese scene, not only among Falcom fans but Mega Drive enthusiasts as a whole. Been looking to play it ever since I finished the PC Engine version, looking forward to it.

I’m not a Sega Genesis expert, but now I feel kind of lame for choosing Aladdin in the SNES thread earlier. ::sadkirby

I was gonna mention Alien Soldier since I figured it would be obscure enough to not be on the list (And it's probably my favourite Mega-Drive/Genesis game) but it is, so I guess I'll just show off Treasure's other games they made for the system:

Dynamite Headdy:

Light Crusader:

McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure:

(Trust me on this one lol)

Landstalker: the treasures of king nole.

This is probably one of climax's (of golden sun fame) best games made, it's a action rpg in the same vein as the legend of zelda and is imo, better than most zelda games for that matter.

The two Shining Force games are some of the best tactical rpg's ever made, bar none.

All three of these were ones I considered putting on the ban list, but I chose to put both Gunstar Heroes (the most popular) and Alien Soldier (the underground hidden gem) and leave it there for Treasure.

Their output on this system was exactly as their name implies: a treasure. There would be no point to ban all their software, since they’re all great games worthy of praise. Still, I’ve never seen anybody talk about Dynamite Heady aside from “it exists and is good”.

Right on, saw you in the SNES thread, now I'm shitting up you're recommends also.

Haunting: Starring Poulterguy is probably one of the most unique games on the system (important, given just how much it's swamped with platformers and horizontal shooters). It's sort of a predecessor to games like "Ghost Master" on the PC, where you play as the eponymous "Poulterguy" and possess various objects around the house to scare some white bread family and get them to leave, Beetlejuice style.
crusader-of-centy-genesis.jpg

Crusader of Centy is a really good Zelda clone, but you can jump and you have animal buddies instead of items. It's also a lot less cramped I find, taking place more outdoors than in stuffy caves of dungeons.
decapattack2.jpg

This really should've been on your list of Genesus games people glaze constantly. But it's not, so I'm putting it here. Probably the best game Vic Tokai ever made, like SMB2 it;s reskin of a game that wouldn't have sold in the west (an anime called "Magical Hat"). So instead, fuck it, give it a distinctive horror theme and turn the protagonist into a headless mummy that attacks people with a scary fucking mouth that comes out his stomach. Instant AAA classic.
maxresdefault.jpg

Fighting Masters is a really clumsy fighting game {not nearly as bad as Beast Wrestler, but whatever) yet it lets you play as this creepy sphinx head guy suplexing a boxing unicorn, how can you go wrong?

Shining in Darkness is a pretty alright first person dungeon crawler like Wizardry, but I found how it handled NPCs and cutscenes far more immersive, Also, they have this really fun way of having enemies just pop out at you during encounters that's really fun. Definitely keep a strategy guide handy, as it's easy to get lost. Plus, you don't get party members until finishing the first quest which makes getting started needlessly difficult.

Fuck yeah, Mazin Fighter. Based off the Go Nagai manga of the same name, Mazin Fighter is a standard beat 'em up (nowhere near as good as Streets of Rage) with a badass spinning slash attack that would give Chakan a run for his money. Also, the game spontaneously turns into fighting game during boss fights.

What? You said we couldn't talk about "Vectorman" not "Vectorman 2". And since you felt the need to every sequel individually, that means I can say that Vectorman 2 is pretty cool in this thread.

Gunstar I fully expected to be on the list since it's their most well known game for the system, Alien Soldier is definitely not as obscure as it once was, but I still like to think it is sometimes lol.

You're right about Dynamite Headdy. It's weird that it's one of the most critically acclaimed games for the system yet very few people even acknowledge it, or if they do; rarely go beyond "it's cool" like you said. Hell, it was only last year people became more aware of the cut dialogue that was removed from the game once it left Japan as well as some slight censorship.

I would've included the Yu Yu Hakusho game they made, but in all honesty I really don't like it that much lol. I love Treasure to death but that easily has to be their weakest game IMO.

No mention of all the Shining Forces? I weep, and will summon Dark Dragon, Zeon, Iom and co. to cause devastation. Also, Quackshot, Strider, Super Monaco GP 2, Ranger X, X Men 2: Clone Wars, Burning Force and so, so many others are worth a mention.

Edit: Beyond Oasis, Twinkle Tale, Alisia Dragoon... sure the Mega Drive was sorely starved in the RPG front, but elsewhere? it had plenty to offer.

I made sure not to include the Shining Force games because I want people to talk about their love for them so badly lol

Also, YES ALISIA DRAGOON! It’s a great action game, with its major flaw being the perhaps too brutal enemy onslaught, but it’s such a cool game to play.

I think perhaps the bad publicity it got back in the day came from it being a game that could have, world design-wise, made for a great RPG. But instead it was a 7 or 8 out of 10 action game with a godly aesthetic and great music. Expectations kinda set it up to fail in Japan, and a lack of much marketing everywhere else didn’t give it the legs to stand on elsewhere. A darn shame, since it’s still so fun and pretty.

Sonic Eraser is a puzzle game with a god awful music
Mega_Drive_image_-_Sonic_Eraser_2.webp

Only released for SEGA Game Toshokan service. The game is a decent puzzle but better play it without sound

To be honest, I didn't expect such enthusiasm from the community for the “Talk about any Super Famicom game that isn't one of these 25” thread, but evidently the seeds planted by Spike's generosity are starting to bloom.

Anyway, I had already planned to open a similar thread for Sega's 16-bit console as well, but your excitement beat me to it and by a wide margin (the SF thread isn't even 12 hours old at the time of writing!).

In any case, the title and style I had in mind were almost identical to the SF version, in fact it was going to be called "Talk about any Sega Mega Drive game that isn't one of these 25", however, on this occasion I was undecided whether to include an exclusion list, because the Sega generation following the SMD/SG was a continuous chain of coitus interruptus and indeed it is fragmented compared to the more united "Nintendo family" and perhaps today it wouldn't have hurt to discuss which original titles drove more than one generation to obsess over the blue hedgehog, so much so that it even drove Michael Jackson to pick up the phone for Sega, but not for his brother Jermaine, who then angrily retorted with his "word to the badd!". :loldog

The image I had selected to kick things off was the following one, since the Christmas season has just passed (is the one you chose a photo of your own personal Mega Drive instead?).

After that as with the original thread, I would have specified that “I used the name 'Sega Mega Drive' as a personal preference, but in reality all titles from any continent are fine”.

And subsequently, I would have moved immediately to the short list of rules to follow “The rules to follow are just these 3.

01) Do not use text only, but always share images. Take your pick among covers, screenshots, ads or all 3. If you want to go further by attaching video or sound clips as well, even better for everyone.

02) Choose to talk about what really engaged you and in the way you prefer, rather than what the ears of the majority of the surviving audience today would like to hear.

03) Never talk about these 25 titles unless it is to make a comparison/citation".

And then since there’s no guarantee that those reading now would have already read the SF one as well, I would have closed with a conclusion very similar to the original “The Sega Mega Drive will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2 years and this platform saw the publication of nearly 900 games, but for how much longer do we have to hear about the continuous idealization of only these 25?

Sorry, I guess you were looking for more intimate, personal stories, so I'll give proper input. Shining Force 2 was my first SRPG, and even though I didn't have the slightest notion of how to play I loved the beautiful graphics, memorable soundtrack and everything else. I didn't understand the dialogues back in the day, but even so I managed to limp my way up to Zalbard, but I could go no further as a kid.

I have a soft spot for the Shining series up to this day, and I'm always on the look out for hacks that switch things up or fix bugs. The Shining Force 2 disassembly allows for incredible things, and I wouldn't be surprised if whole new games spawned from it.

We need a N64 one

I didn't grow up with the system, but Fatal Labyrinth is my favorite Mega Drive game. It was probably the first (or definitely among the first) "dungeon crawler" type game I played, and made me fall in love with that particular kind of gameplay.
I thought it was super immersive and exciting and tense despire being fairly simple.
