The Sword Art Online universe has spawned numerous stories and worlds that regularly serve as inspiration for anime and video games. Unless you're a die hard fan and you probably lost track of them a while ago. Fortunately that doesn't matter for Fractured Daydream as the new spin-off sees itself as a straightforward best of the series.
The Galaxia system creates a lot of chaos in Alfheim Online: Different worlds and timelines merge allowing diverse characters from the many story arcs to collide. As a player you restore order in the approximately 12 hour story mode. The confusing story may entertain fans of the original at best but it's merely a means to an end and sending you on numerous missions that always have the same goal: to wipe the floor with enemies. You do this with a simple real time combat system that lets you fight, dodge and access a handful of special skills. As the story progresses your roster of heroes grows from which you can assemble groups to your liking sometimes more openly sometimes less openly. Depending on their class such as tank, fighter or support heroes use different weapons and fighting styles however, the gameplay changes only marginally. You use random loot from missions to equip your favorites for further battles.
After the story you can let off steam in various multiplayer modes such as boss raids which you can take on online with up to 20 players. While this is certainly fun and it doesn't come close to the complexity of comparable MMO raids.
My Opinion
You can certainly dive into the MMO action role playing game without much prior knowledge but after the story mode it quickly degenerates into a monotonous grind-fest. At least Fractured Daydream is playable looks decent and offers stable performance. In terms of gameplay however it hardly compares to comparable genre representatives like Granblue Fantasy Relink. Fans of the Series will jump on it while the rest will likely look to the competition.Game: | |
