If you were thinking of getting a Switch 2, you might want to get it now before it jumps to $500 on September 1st.

At this point, I'll probably wait until much later in this console's lifecycle to get one. Most of thr games there aren't that interesting to me. Not even Mario Kart World looks appealing.

I'm happy with my Steam Deck and Switch 1 combo amongst my other consoles I own.

Not a shock. They can point to their competition and how they're still coming in cheap (is it cheaper than every model of PS5 and Xbox at this new price?), and if that doesn't work, they can blame world supply lines or whatever. I'm more surprised they didn't try and go higher.

I mean, I get it, Helium is mandatory to produce chips, and about a third of the world production comes from the strait of hormuz, along with the ram crisis caused by AI and other international events that I won't mention here, it's normal to see price hikes on electronics. That being said, once these international events are over, they better reduce those prices back again

$500 is not even remotely worth it for this console. I say this as a man with the original Switch in his top 3 favorite consoles. There's almost nothing for the Switch 2 that you can't get for the original Switch. The UI is almost identical, the form factor of the Switch 2 is almost identical, the eShop still sells everything from the Switch 1.

I get that parts are difficult to come by, but console manufacturers historically almost always operated at a loss and made up for it with software sales. Nintendo isn't hurting for money; they can take a hit and never feel it financially. This is silliness.

Switch 2 is on a shaky path. Huge potential, don't get me wrong. But the Game Key Card problem is disastrous and Nintendo still need to impress us. Long over are the old Ye Nintendo type of feel with these subsciptions in the way nowadays. Back in the day, a new Nintendo console felt way more unique. This one needs to try better. I still like it but, you get my stance I bet

Good thing the software library and game key cards already made me not want it, I guess!

Aren’t these things supposed to lower in price over time?
It's Nintendo you're talking about. They rather lose sales than lower the prices of their games/consoles. Not that it impacts them heavily, they have a loyal fanbase that buys anything that the big N puts out

Woot's been selling them off and on for $399.99.

If the RAM shortage continues at the same rate it's been going this year, it might even go to 600$. I'm definetly going to wait until the hackers find a safe and hopefully not expensive method of modding the Switch 2.

Sadly this is almost never what happens, they just let consumers get used to paying more and then keep prices at their new floor regardless of the state of the economy. Outright bankruptcy needs to be a risk for prices to drop, and with both how safe these companies play it and how devoted customer bases tend to be, that's just not happening yet.

It makes me especially grateful that I got the 2witch and PS5 when I did, which I almost never do - I've always waited until mid-life of a console at the earliest to get it, when they tend to be cheaper and have a lot more games available. But ever since COVID, sanity hasn't been something you can count on, so sometimes the instinct to jump quick is the right one.

Hopefully the secondhand market helps pick up some of the slack for people who want one of these in the future, because they are both excellent systems that really make the last-gen experience a whole lot better, even if their own libraries are still a bit lacking.

It could bring panic buying yet I feel like that AI induced RAM shortage has made the 9th gen one of the weakest in gaming's history...

No. This situation is spread among every major actors in the CPU industry. You already know this good sir. But Nintendo indeed veered toward the greedier path since the death of satoru Iwata I guess. Don't you feel like this?

It's true, it's happening with everyone right now. But Nintendo its been doing it long before the current crisis, with the argument that their games and consoles "doesn't lose their value over time", so that's why their prices rarely goes down ::cirnoshrug

Yeah, can't really link it to Iwata (directly anyway). It's always been more of a market-based approach with Nintendo - the 3DS sells badly, discount it. The Wii U sells badly, make cheaper Selects reprints for it. But the Switch sells especially well? NO GAME DISCOUNTS! RIDE THE WHIRLWIND!

I blame them about as much as I do any company - I wish they or most companies in general could just enjoy regular profits without pushing their base to extremes, but it is what it is since they're publicly traded, so what can you do?

That and the software output hasn't been good. We've seen mostly remakes, remasters, sequels and live service games that haven't quite stick the landing.

And consoles have been going up in price with multiple price hikes while implementing shady stuff behind their players' backs, like dynamic pricing and the temporary license system for digital games.

They seem to want to eat cake and keep it at the same time, delivering significantly less and charging significantly more and expecting people to support them.

Personally I'm out of modern gaming. I'm going to see modern gaming crash and burn. Instead I'm going to focus on the sizeable collection of consoles and games I already have. I'll be on Battle Garegga, Die Hard Arcade, Batrider, Fable 2, Resident Evil 2 Remake, Crazy Taxi, Dead or Alive 2, Alpha Protocol, Marvel VS Capcom 2, ...

Current gen is all about extracting value from consumers and lining the pockets of investors. They don't really seem to care about the people that buy their consoles and play their games.

also the fact that many game studios have suffered massive layoffs throughout the years, causing the triple aaa market to constantly bleed talent

I agree that there's a lack of creativity (even if some remakes and remasters are genuinely good). I don't see the issue about sequels if they are good ones.

On the other hand Live Service games are really annoying because they have the worst aspect of a MMORPG without the good ones...
