Survey for YT Channel

Hello everyone,

I had to take a long break from creating YouTube videos for my channel. It is called a Retro Game a Day. So far, I have been going through games on my retro (400 games in 1) handheld and giving a brief history and background of each game. I’ve done this through YouTube shorts.

So far, I’ve just created short videos without me talking or anything. I may try more, but I want to see what you all usually watch. Thanks for your help!

If something's aiming to be informative, I like it to be something along the lines of a Chrontendo, where it's a brief overview unless a game really bears diving deeper into. But I also don't mind something like LGR's old game reviews where it was 10-15 minutes on a thing, it really just depends on the thing in question; once he got into weird hardware I can't say it holds my attention for the whole video.

Also, I like longplays as background noise, just hearing a game being played with no commentary. Great for cleaning or reading or whatever.

But I think the main thing I like is videos where it's just someone hanging out and playing a thing, no prepared commentary, no being in-character the whole time. Basically, the video equivalent of going to someone's house and they're showing you this thing they're playing. The most direct example I can think of is the Keypunch Software videos that LGR did about a decade ago. It's just a camera pointed at a monitor and he's going through some disks to see what's on them. I like that. But I also know I'm in the vast minority with this preference.

I've been watching quite a lot of Retro game stuff and I gotta say, I really love watching videos with a long or short list of games different ports and genre

Thanks for your suggestions and examples. Do you think it's crucial to talk throughout or just let the game do most of the talking, per se? Do you prefer for the person over the channel to show themselves at all, or mainly the game?

If you're comfortable to show your face then sure, but I think some (if not most) people would love if you're just straight to it like y'know? Show the games? I don't mind hearing you talk about it though, I'd love to listen

I like to watch Dungeon Chill and Majuular, they go on detail about the game's conception, development and play through them entirely giving their thoughts and referencing what the developers intended. I quite dislike everything else available in Youtube even if it's constantly recommending me things like "X was a masterpice" or stupid crap like that.

I prefer for the person to be having fun most of all. It can come across in the presentation when you can tell it has become a job for them and they're not digging it as much as they once did. I feel like the best approach is to make the kind of content you would like to watch yourself. If that's beyond the scope of what you can do (ie, you might like heavily edited content but not know how to do that), then whatever is most fun for you.
