Game Description:

Suspicious Space Pirate activity has been detected by the Galactic Federation in the remote Tog’Tassano system and Samus is sent to check it out. Discover the truth of what’s going on and power yourself up in this frigid, hostile environment.

Hack Credits:

Released by: Onnyks
Type: New Story/Graphics/Levels/Gameplay
Language: English
Status: Complete
Patch Version: v2.0
Date: 13 June 2026

Source and details: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/9734/

Cryogenesis v1.0 was originally created for a streaming contest and has since been expanded on to create a longer hack experience. v2.0 is a sprawling, full adventure that builds on that foundation.

Features many mechanics changes:
  • New and Reimagined Powerups
  • Boss Modifications
  • Custom Room Events
The hack has a focus on atmospheric storytelling and detailed visuals, building an entirely new environment for Samus to experience, explore, and ultimately explode.

Although challenging moments will still arise, the hack is designed for even a player with zero Super Metroid skills. The only techniques required for completion will be taught to you in game.

This hack was recommended by Rage Burner and gets a DK Thumbs Up by him

Forcing you to single wall jump, bomb jump for a very long time, shinespark multiple times in a row is why I haven't finished like 99% of the ROM hacks I have come across for Super Metroid which is just so irritating as Super Metroid is my favorite game ever thanks to being the the first ever video game I played
I highly recommend Subversion. It's the best Super Metroid romhack I've ever encountered and as crazy as it sounds I actually liked it more than the original game. It doesn't have any of those annoying forced gameplay gimmicks that you just mentioned and instead it has wholly original mechanics and puzzles that feel fresh and complement the engine of the game. It's a very vast game and has like double the amount of rooms, but all the areas manage to stay interesting and don't tire you out. It also has a nice logbook thing that updates with new information about areas and the story that I've not seen done in other hacks. Super Junkoid DX is another good one along with it's NES prequel but it creates a whole new story and setting that has nothing to do with Metroid.

edit: lol I forgot you already played that one since you left a comment on it when I posted it back then. Did you ever figure out what you needed to do to progress?

Played an hour or so and... yeah this is great!
The creator absolutely nails the constant tension of being on a hostile planet. A simple shift in temperature turns familiar situations on their head. It's got a real tight balance too, which is extremely impressive for a hack that utilizes a lot of energy-drain mechanics.

Don't forget the ones that make you wall jump continuously for long stretches of time. Like it's the only way to progress. Those are irritating and annoying
Totally; only chain bomb jumping as a requirement is even worse, to me.

I'm very glad when hack creators put in the thoughts and kindness to not forget about people who aren't masters of the game.

Being able to enjoy a romp of this kind of caliber without the implicit requirement to be able to Shinespark perfectly 10 times in a row while dancing to Macarena just to get by is refreshing. Great upload!
