Meat Boy was amazing! Indie games have been a way of life for Japanese and European markets for decades, but Super Meat Boy became an icon of the first wave of “indie” games to hit the U.S.
The game has a very distinct feel, very Newgrounds, and it’s of that era of attempting to modernize the ultra hard 8-bit games into a modern form factor. It’s a rage game. But unlike others of its time, it’s not a bad one. The traps aren’t cheap, they’re very negotiable with patience and execution, and that’s what’s made it so good. The tragedy is, sadly, Meat Boy seems somewhat forgotten nowadays. Which is a huge bummer! This gem should have spawned a series with as much love and fanfare as Shantae or Shovel Knight, or at least a long line of re-releases like Cave Story, but it sadly sits somewhat left behind.
Here’s hoping a nostalgia boom hits for this game soon! If I remember it from my childhood, surely there are other youngn’s like me who can help make a movement!
