Stupid and Silly Inventions Thread

Puctured above is the infamous “operation soda steal”, and it has thankfully been well documented. The aspect that appeals to my personally is the invention used to make this possible. Instead of simply brining a container and dumping soda in it, coming up with a plan to make yourself not seem suspicious, the OP literally designed this impractical device that has you filling up a cup to send soda through a tube to a duffel bag. It made me think of the most incredibly stupid inventions I’ve seen over the years.

Technology legitimately rots all our brains, because a savvy salesman can make even the dumbest idea seem slightly logical enough to make you want to put some money down. I just want this thread to stand as a monument to all the absolute STUPIDEST inventions that, even from a photo, immediately make you go “that’s so dumb. Who would EVER buy that thing?”


I have to share this one, because it’s total 2010’s nonsense that is actual brainrot:
At some electronics show, somebody showed off a TV that would detect 9:16 content and then rotate on a motorized swivel to match it. Now, I’m sure us vertical shooter fans are salivating, but the stupid part is what this was intended for: it was meant for feature productions that would use that aspect ratio… or just scrolling instagram on a TV.
Let’s not even mention that monitors can be put into that orientation for years by simply just… rotating them yourself. You don’t need a specialized TV for that, just so you can blast TikTok into your eyeballs in 4K.

There was an automatic fork specifically designed for eating spaghetti, but it took so long to get the strands forked that the pasta was always cold by the time it reached your mouth.

There were also spikes on water bottles to prevent delivery people from drinking them during transportation.

And, my personal favorite, an "anti-theft alarm" so bulky that it took up your entire pocket, effectively making it so there was nothing else to steal XD

There was an automatic fork specifically designed for eating spaghetti, but it took so long to get the strands forked that the pasta was always cold by the time it reached your mouth.

I REMEMBER THE FORK! There was also a motorized one that spun around to gather it up. Spaghetti really does bring the stupid out of people.

I guess if we’re including food now, we have to include the most recent obsession with pickles that has resulted in this… thing.

A couple years ago it was bacon. A random food item will just become all the rage every few years, huh?

I know that the modern key binds standard was not as prevalent when this controller was made, but still. Shape wise it’s all wrong. I held one of these, I believe at a flea market, and I was dumbstruck at how easy it was to brush part of your hands against a key and press it by accident.

i have a character in a story that i'm working on who is designing something like this to use while playing games. it definitely wouldn't look this cumbersome though.

This is such a dad fix. Like, dad starts by saying “well, my first car didn’t have air conditioning” and then he jury rigs this together in a couple hours, hungover, and swears he never did when you ask him about it years later.
