has anyone else been playing with the new recomp of starfox 64? The nintendo direct about the new star fox caught my attention so I decided to delve into the recomp that I had heard about on the retro warriors podcast.
played it on my steam deck handheld and also docked to me modern TV.
spectacular.
overall it felt like starfox as I remembered it but just... adapted. the wide screen mode and HUD Adjustments were completely unnoticeable, which is I think, the point.
I fiddled with the settings and adjusted the film grain. The grain on was wild, it was precisely what I remembered from playing on a crt in the 90s.
I did notice some visual chug, but I was playing at an adaptable resolution on a mediocre 65 inch tv; I don't expect miracles. The drop in frame rate was only ever in cutscenes, which I don't remember being particularly smooth on the original hardware
There is a fairly limited mod community, the only one I found of any consequence was a mod making the audio uncompressed. Felt a little sacreligous and I wasn't interested. The previous recompilation project has more mods, mostly swapping the model for your ship to others in the series or from other pop culture spaces.
Big time recommend . It's maybe not quite as good as the 3ds port, but the novelty of it on native Linux software and the crispness of the experience makes it worth shagging with for at least a few runs
