A game that aged like fine wine like Star Ocean 2. Released on the PSX and PSP vs it's modern day equivalent Star Ocean 2 R.

Which one you think is better?

Depends on what you care about. If you want the original intended experience with its insane item creation and skill system with 0 direction, then play the original.

If you want a more modernized interface with a touch more description and optimization, I'd go for R.

It's the same exact story. The biggest differences are in the Item Creation, which is sped up, and the Skills, which are a bit more intuitive.

Either way you'll need a guide for recruitment and general explanation.

This is a long way of saying neither is 'better', it's all up to how you prefer your experience.

New version is just more convenient to pick up and play on modern hardware.

It's insane that First Departure R never made it to Steam yet.

I would choose the original Star Ocean 2 over R (also over the rest of Star Ocean games any day), but R is what developers doing remakes should aim to: same gameplay with a few changes here and there.
