No, it's not a skill issue, the game genuinely sabotages low levels like me and I need a way to vent about it. And no, I'm not buying a fucking switch just for one game

People still play Sploon 1? Thought the only population for that game was Plankton's army

Pretendo probably needs to gain more awareness so that the player population might grow. I just hope it doesn't arouse N's attention.

Since pretendo is a niche thing I imagine there's a bigger ratio of high level to low level there.

I can't imagine how hard I'd get my ass kicked if I tried to play Mario Kart Wii online nowadays
you are correct.

This is how matchmaking is gonna work for any old game with a userbase in the hundreds-at-most. The game nor the fanmade service are trying to sabotage you, its just that this is inevitable when the only way to play this game online is via connecting to a fan server (I assume via modded hardware). The only people who typically wanna do that are people who loved and poured tons of time into the old game, so naturally the average skill level of the small userbase will be significantly higher.

It'd be like booting up Fightcade and complaining that the only people still playing Street Fighter Alpha 3 are all pretty damn good. It's just the nature of playing old games. At least in fighting games you only need to find a couple other people at your level to have fun. For a game like Splatoon I'm not sure what the solution is...

I'm playing via cemu on my steam deck

Yea I feel when you have such a small community to play with, match making really isn't going to work at all. Though I dont remember how matchmaking even worked for it when it as popular.

The matchmaking is probably working perfectly as intended, it's just that tiny niche communities like this are so diehard about it, the only people that play these games are people that are ridiculously good at the game. Take it from someone that plays Titanfall 2, new players can barely get 5 kills in that game with veterans running around. Its probably the same on Pretendo, except magnified even more because Pretendo is even more niche than Titanfall.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Splatoon always kind of niche? not saying it's bad, though, it's a pretty fresh take.

I suppose there is this? https://vgtimes.com/games/foamstars/
Splatoon sold great for a Wii U game. And the sequels sold well on the switch.
Its niche because its only on Nintendo systems, when compared to something like Multi plat FPSs

i'm usually a bigger advocate of community server support and custom content like maps where possible. i got YEARS out of team fortress 2 cus of that stuff
bots for splatoon would be neat, I played with bots on the wii u port of CoD BO2 a lot and it was decent fun.

bots are good too, honestly the way i was thinking of it i just assumed it was default. bots are NOT default now, but in a weird way? a lot of games seem to have bots but make it look like they don't and are matchmaking you with real people

Did you played on SLAG Gaming servers or the Mario Kart map? Those were my thing back then.

i played a shitton of the slag servers!! i'm even in the 123pendejos vid (i think he's a different name now, i can't find it anymore)
my favourite was steveh's though, i liked the oddball map rotations they had

Agreed, Northstar for Titanfall 2 has done wonders. I still prefer vanilla but I can see why so many people love it still.
I've probably sunken more hours into community server on Team Fortress 2 than anything else in that game.

You could always try to arrange a thing with friends? A custom lobby? Don't know if Splat 1 has those.

123pendejos is called Sr. Pelo now

Did you browse the slag gaming forums back then? I was an active user there

This is a ridiculous thing to complain about considering its running on a niche 3rd party server now.

If you only care about Splatoon then you have 2 games to play too if you get a Switch. I don't think I've ever seen anyone who has a Wii U but didn't get a Switch as well. Might as well just wait for Switch 2 in a few months at this point.
