Heyo, today I want to talk about a topic that correlates to my article, and that is spiritual successors.
You know, games that carry the same feeling or even the same gameplay from a previous title, but are not the same IP in any way, shape or form.
I personally have played Symphony of War, a indie game on steam that is heavilly inspired on the Tactics Ogre series.

Do you have any games that have lived up to what came before them?

so idk if anyone else felt this way but when i first played xenoblade chronicles 2 it felt like its plot and characters borrowed or took heavy inspiration from the Tales of Xillia games on PS3.
I dont think its technically a spiritual successor since theres no overlap with development teams but its the closest thing that comes to mind for me

Personally I kinda doubt it, I think XC2 just expands on XC1 in terms of plot and characters like how Reyn = Zeke (hyperactive go-getter characters), Nia = Melia (mage character with a unique power others don’t get, in this case being that
Melia can control ether and Nia can change from humanoid to Blade
), Tora = Riki (pretty obvious, they both serve as the quirky comic relief of their respective games), Rex = Shulk (shonen type protagonists with a unique sword) and so on. I don’t really see why they’d take any inspiration from Tales, much less one of the PS3 exclusive titles and not one of the more modern ones by the standards of Xenoblade 2. But then again, I could be wrong, it is the game that got Kosmos and Telos back, both of whom are from a Bamco franchise.

To answer the question:

-Azure Striker Gunvolt: It almost plays nothing like MMZ tbh but I quite like it

-Gravity Circuit: Plays mostly like Mega Man Zero, I love it

-Touhou ADiA: The chances of Atlus re-releasing the older SMTs or even making another game like Strange Journey is a fat ZERO. So I’ll take what I’ll get, good game

The Dark Mod, which takes after and builds on the stealth gameplay of Thief 1 and 2. As the name suggests it began as a mod, running off DOOM 3, but since 2013 when the source code was released by id Software, it has been completely free and standalone. It really stands out to me in this regard as having been such a wholly community driven effort, with much of its conception being rooted in the limits of map editing for the official Thief 3, in fact.
This can also be to its detriment though, as past a few bundled introductory levels, there's no lengthy dedicated main campaign. It's up to the user and people's recommendations on what levels to try out. The world and stories can also feel a bit too derivative at times, very much being Thief's with legally distinct alterations as needed.

I always felt that Bendy And The Ink Machine are the closest i will play Epic Mickey 3

Now if you excuse me i am goin to my room to cry again after reminding me of that

Official successors or indie games replicating another game series?
Both honestly, whatever game you feel picks up the mantle where a series ended on.
And if I have to give an "official" successor, then Star Force is also pretty cool.

Well, speaking of the Ogre Battle series!

Unicorn Overlord is pretty much the sequel to Ogre Battle 64.

(Ogre Battle 65? Ogre Battle: Ogre The Top? Ogre Battle: Maximum Ogredrive?)

Yeeeees! I forgot about it totally! It has a very similar battle system, but it's so unique in its own right that I forgot about its inspiration. Symphony of War is more direct with it since the dev did say that Ogre Tactics is his favorite strategy game.

Oh man, I got a couple but as not to be the only one spamming, I'll only share two. (for now at least)

Entropy: Zero 2 is an absolutely fantastic Half-Life experience.
It may not be the craved Half-Life 3 but it offers all the solid fundamentals to what makes an enjoyable Half-Life game.
I would recommend to any Half-Life fan and would even award it he title of "The Best Half-Life Mod".

Touhou Artificial Dream in Arcadia is a very weird combination.
For starters, this is a spiritual successor to classic 90's Shin Megami Tensei but mixes it together with lore, characters and elements from Touhou.
This is such a strange combination that's aimed at like 10 people on earth and till this day I'm still unsure which side of the combo is stranger.
Now I know close to fuckin' nothing about Touhou, however I found my stay quite enjoyable despite it.
Would definitely recommend this one to classic SMT fan's, it feels just like home and somebody else's at the same time.

I think this is a more worthy add-on than Hunt Down the Freeman and Prospekt.

Lost Sphear feels very much like a spiritual successor to Xenogears. Has a similar battle system of storing AP too.

I'm still hoping Armed Fantasia and Penny Blood get a publisher eventually.

Bioshock to System Shock
Bloodstained to Symphony of the Night.
Prey 2016 is very much trying to be system shock.
