Through the years, I adored Dragon Ball games. From having weird RPG gimmicks to a straight out brawl-fest.

When I heard a new game was being released, I jumped on in and saved money. Only for my money to get wasted for a few months on long matchmaking, same gameplay, and only little story content. Don't get me wrong, DB Sparking Zero is a great game, but it just so lacked on content which makes the devs look like they spent more time managing the roster than coming up with great ideas. Sure, the What-if stories exist but that's just it. The whole game offered tiny bits of content whilst its gameplay is very lackluster when you turn your brain on and realized that majority of the characters do the same thing.

What are your thoughts?

I agree with you ngl but also I believe sparking isn’t like your average fighting game it’s more like a party game you just kinda have fun with that’s why I don’t know why people got mad in like ranked when people would do goofy stuff it’s like bro it’s built in the game ?

You do have a point with it being more of a fighting game for the sake of having fun. The problem lies on it being very competitive with its player base. Seriously though, I find it funny when people rage in games especially in PSN.

I feel like now we are in the landscape of gaming where people want everything to be competitive like the average player which is fine but than their tend to be blurred lines when they can’t tell what’s a comp game or what’s just fun casual

I would blame TEKKEN because of how toxic their community is, and how players from that game infected others with their disease.

I haven't played it (don't think I will), but spent a lot of time on Tenkaichi as well as Xenoverse and I think the problem here is that they devoted most of their resources towards the roster because they envision some future competitive niche, like FighterZ on the one hand, and on the other they want to make sure people get their favorites so they'll actually bother to buy the game in the first place and DLCs, because that's how the long term sustainability and cost covering works for games like this.

Like you said, yeah, everyone is mostly the same - that's a side effect of following the Tenkaichi framework.

Tbh it was good for like 1h ,it was nice to try different characters but it gets repetitive quick, characters plays the same and it feels like you play with same person just with different skin/animations

I was going to buy it until I saw that the story mode was lackluster.

You have to admit, they delivered what the masses were asking for.

Pay attention when I say “the masses.”
The masses saw Tenkaichi 3 as a game with hundreds and hundreds of characters to spend afternoons on, performing random fights.

And that’s exactly the game they gave us: a game with hundreds and hundreds of characters for random fights.
The game lacks in several areas because they had to spend an absurd amount of time creating a roster of 182 characters from scratch, as that’s what the general public wanted. Sure, Tenkaichi 3 had some decent secondary modes, but those weren’t what most people cared about.

If they had included fewer characters to focus more on arenas, modes, or other things that were objectively more important than having Babidi in the roster, a lot of people would’ve complained because “it has fewer characters than Tenkaichi 3,” ignoring the fact that Tenkaichi 3 reused assets from Tenkaichi 2 and Tenkaichi 1.

For me, this excessive adoration for Tenkaichi 3 has only hurt the game (Sparking Zero) rather than helped it. Or rather, it may have helped in terms of sales, but not in terms of perception.

Why? Because 17 years have passed, and many people are wallowing in nostalgia, asking for a game where they can spend time doing random fights because that’s what they did as kids.
But it doesn’t work like that anymore. Games have changed, and so have the players.

At the same time : it's a game for Dragon ball fans, full of fan service.
not a good fighting game ( this is not just my opinion)
it hype when it comes but it's quickly forgotten

Doesn’t this always kinda happens with Anime fighters? Like the exception was FighterZ because it was actually a very competitive fighting game. But 3d bandai namco anime fighter always kinda died in terms of online statistics and more content. Sure kids will probably still play this game because they may not know any better or they don’t care about online matches or additional content as much as teens and adults. This fighters are more in line with PS2 era fighters but with the inconvenience of being developed for this modern online gaming era, soo they feel lacking because in comparison to other games with different models of financial support (Free to play, live service, micro transactions, all that kind of stuff). These game aren’t bad, and i am not saying they should change their financial model (pls no, i fucking hate battle passes especially in paid games) but yeah, we are comparing maybe to different eras of products and this era kinda sucks in general for this kind of games.
